Not 100% sure what's meant in this specific example but as someone who did advent of code a lot, there are truly benefits of an untyped python dictionary over anything in Rust or Java or C++. You can just put None next to your integers

I've written a lot of python in my life (but most of the time not as my main day-to-day language) so whenever I had to try something small in a REPL I do paste. I guess it would work to highlight a piece of code and run it externally w

Interestingly my main quality of life improvement when writing Rust is being able to leave the brackets around the test in an if statement empty (vs C/C++/PHP_), I don't care about the square brackets for the body as much.

Nice, I only managed to do 20 (of the same goal, 25 languages) in 2019: https://f5n.org/blog/2019/advent-of-code-2019/ > Tactic: Do translation more than optimization This rings especially true - "you

See my other comment, we started a Python 2 project in late 2013 (Python 3.0 was released in 2008) because of all the dependencies we wanted to use were not ported (yet, no clue if they ever were).

I mean, in the most basic sense you could always have non-ASCII chars in your filenames on a webserver, which could be part of a URL then.

Not the one you replied to, but we were doing things mostly without strings (audio processing, stuff with bits) and python 2 worked perfectly fine. We had started this project as late as 2013 because the important libraries had not been por

I'm still looking for a good alternative term than "use case" without resorting to a whole sentence trying to ask what the person needs solving or how the thing is going to be used. Doubly so in German.

If by learn you mean rote-memorize some syntax. I doubt most people who have never touched it will manage to use or even understand enough about pointers and arrays and stuff in a single day. Get some stuff to compile maybe, yeah.

+1 for "Deep C Secrets" - excellent book. I don't use C enough to judge if it has stood up to the test of time, but I loved reading it.

The most fascinating bit for me is that people actually used any of the social features of Google Reader. I just read my feeds and interacted with nobody, and that wasn't too uncommon in my circles.

AFAICT Schufa is not like a US credit score. It's just OK/NOT OK, or a list of "infractions". Which means if you always paid your stuff on time, a virtual +1 is the same as a +1000, and the visible result will just be &q

I tend to agree with your assessment, but I see a key difference is that computers are simply versatile and you can make them do everything you want (skills in configuring/coding notwithstanding) but even big leaps seem so much easier

I'm not taking any side here but I don't think your comparison holds. Portal is as much a story-driven game as it is about the mechanics. I know very few people who played Portal after they finished it, except maybe replaying it.
