I would venture to say it does. You can't really fault Github for individual teams not opting to host their code in more than one spot online, even if Github doesn't offer the capability for users to use their own domain name for seamless s

They're guidelines. In the case of OS X laptops, they're almost uniformly used as single-user machines. This just takes the hassle of having to sudo to do it. There are a few other reasons they specifically opted for /usr/local instead of o

Web services go down. It happens. You make the choice to use them anyway. In this case, Github is very responsive about outages and clearly strives to eliminate or reduce them as much as possible.

They've struggled and dealt with a number of hard engineering problems, which they've blogged extensively about. In particular, their architectural (both hardware and software) changes since leaving Engine Yard demonstrate more than a simpl

It makes /usr/local owned by the current user rather than root. Not much in the way of voodoo. ;) It's basically a replacement for MacPorts.

The scale of the application affects how much you can really do just by adding indexes to tables and throwing more hardware at it. At a certain point, servers are only so fast and disks only so large and fast.

Who would put a space inside the key name for an item in a hash? I'm confident it's commonly understood best practice (among many languages at that) to use an underscore (_) in lieu of spaces in such things. I agree that the quirks themselv

Now we just need to make a tool for automating the release process. I'm imagining a minor-mode that integrates with vc to take a given tag/branch/what-have-you and upload it to Marmalade. </dream>

Emacs 24 by default uses the GNU package archive, which is limited to software they want on it. However, `package.el` defines an alist of `package-archives` which you can add entries to. My hope is that then someone will end up creating a l

One of the points of RVM is to allow different versions of Ruby to be installed side-by-side easily... Also, large packages like Ruby often have a boat-load of customizations and patches applied to them that may not apply cleanly to subsequ

They already have conflict resolution implemented for multi-device sync over Wi-Fi. It's not clear to me why they can't re-use the algorithm they've already created for this purpose. The cloud infrastructure I'll grant them, but 2 years is

Does anyone have airplay working yet? I was kind of hoping that it'd support streaming music from iTunes to the iPad, but that doesn't appear to to be the case. =/

.NET is a closed platform — but Mono, which does implement parts of .NET in addition to their own changes, is an open platform. All of Mono's design and implementation is transparent.
