I have an old A* pathfinder I wrote in C about 13 years ago that I revisit with surprising frequency. Every now and then I'll have a glass of whisky and pull up the .h and .c files and smile. The code is good, but something about the s

This mirrors my experience in many ways. People with legitimate ill intention were a lot more common in my youth and when I was in a lower socio-economic position. Now I live in a world very similar to the one described by the GP. It took m

Good advice. I usually like to put the ticket number at the end just because it makes autocomplete a little easier.

That's a brilliant summation. My sentiments exactly. It's like they've managed to bring the office with them and get the worst of all worlds in the process.

I spent a while in Thailand and the dropship-bro "digital nomad" culture is just everywhere. During burning season the Chiang Mai dudes would come down to the islands and the rest of us expat/nomad types would bail to avoid t

It's lunacy. I have no idea about the man or who he is but 30-odd year old incidents should never ruin a person's career. This reeks of moral panic.

My understanding is that Fentanyl is synthetic and that China is the primary source of those (three, I think) precursor chemicals. I don't know enough about chemistry to know if the precursors are derived from poppies but I'm not

I stubbed my toe so let's talk about gun reform. Like, sure. Probably some good policy stuff that would make people's lives better but first get yourself a pair of boots. Some advice: move away from the use of privilege as a rheto

It's the synthetic stuff that's the problem. It's all bad, but this is directly related to Fentanyl and OxyContin. Oxies brought opiates to the suburbs and Fentanyl is what ends up killing you b/c it's in all the &q

My point is that pet social projects are fine, and I would absolutely agree that we need a more equitable society, but the root cause of these deaths is that the drugs people use right now are far, far more deadly than they were before the

Most of the surge in "deaths of despair" can be chalked up to opioids being far more powerful. Fentanyl and OxyContin are your bogeymen, the rest of the causal speculation is window dressing. Not that we shouldn't want a more

How would more asymptomatic cases make this an overblown situation? Sure, there's evidence that there are lots of unreported cases but there's also quite incontrovertible evidence of death spikes in places that didn't impleme

The irony about these "distraction free writing" projects is that I'd bet the majority of them are created by people procrastinating when they could be writing.

Seriously, that’s stupid. You’re collecting outliers. Unpublished writers trying to hawk 400k word novels are for the most part delusional. Every single piece in your list that goes into that territory is something written by an established

Depends on how old you are, or for me it did. Some books resonate at different points in a person's life. The fiction that's had the most impact on me as an adult was all stuff I read in my early 30s. * Tropic of Cancer by Henry M

That's untrue. Novels are usually in the 90-110k range, depending on genre. If you're an established author, especially in fantasy or sci fi, insane doorstoppers like that do occur, but 400k is an outlier even for sff.

The one fundamental reason why growth is so important is that without growth, the economy becomes a zero sum game. In order for you to get more money you must take it from someone else since there is only a fixed amount. A low growth worl
