A little tangental. Indians are insanely good drivers given their actual traffic conditions. I just spent two months there and as (fucking annoying) as it was to walk through the crowds with motorcycles whipping by, inches away from me all

That's a shame. You didn't even read the link you were arguing the validity of until now? I still don't think you read it since you've just quoted the thesis but not referenced the notion that the idea even of "Hind

There's a pretty long list of citations at the bottom of that paper and the sample of them that I could be bothered to check for an internet article were legit. If you have any arguments against the thesis of that paper other than ad h

Where am I arguing against "the Vedas" and what does that even mean? The (well cited and researched) paper I linked above mentions how old the Vedas are. However, they are holy books and mythology, not historical documents. A desc

Read the link in my first post above. Your claim would be the same as saying that "Christendom" was a nation during the middle ages and that the EU has always existed as an identity. It's a region with many shared traditions

I seem to have ticked some people off with that statement, but it's factual. The idea of "India" as a nation just didn't exist. To say that the "income" (whatever that means) of India changed under colonization

Source/context? There was no such thing as "India" before colonial rule. The idea of India as a cohesive entity is a colonial and post-colonial innovation. Hinduism was never even a cohesive entity before British rule, it was

Nothing at all is wrong with tenements. The East Village and LES are full of old tenement apartments that rent upwards of $2500-$3000/month.

Writers' block is a myth. Writing is work. Put your ass in a seat and get the job done. Creativity is a vocation, not a bolt from heaven. You want to beat a slump? Produce more work until it gets better. That's all. Want to get fi

The Easter Island statues were never really a mystery. They are just large totems much like many others that are found throughout Polynesia. There was never a question that they were built by the islanders. There were some vagaries around h

My understanding is that there is at least some oral record of clan violence and/or toppling of the Moai, but perhaps I'm way off on that. The museum on the island certainly presented it that way. But I'm no anthropologist. A

I was just in Easter Island/Rapa Nui in December. One of the most incredible places I've ever been to. I have pretty much the exact photo as the one at the top of the article (it's from the quarry where they carved the Moai).

That was a long way to go to get to a Ficciones reference. The Pierre Menard's Don Quixote and the Library of Babel are probably my favorite Borges stories, and I do think they're applicable to the author's point. I just ca

When I first immigrated to Australia I was shocked at the tone that journalists used, even in mainstream publications. Turns out it's just an Aussie thing. People can argue about the merits of that tone but that article fits pretty wel

Oh, I was around. Regardless, I was stating that your dismissal of "basic economics" was wrong. It's not basic economics, there's a lot that goes into the equation. Wages might go down. Wages might not go down by a ton.

Good point! Though I am quite good at resting my hands and haven't developed RSI over the last fifteen years or so. I would still place a heavy bet that workplace injuries are more common amongst labor-heavy jobs ;)

Keep in mind that a lifetime of manual labor often leads to chronic injuries and pain. How many of those old timers had back problems? I grew up working on fishing boats in Alaska, I know the drill pretty well. I don't have a vise-like

The most amazing thing in that article is "an even weirder move". Not often you see a Professor Brothers reference in a Bloomberg business column.

I do have to say that Buenos Aires definitely reminds me of NY. But those are first impressions and I'm probably just missing home a bit.

Buenos Aires is incredibly safe when it comes to murder rate. Its petty crime is very high though, with over 900 robberies per 100k people.

Definitely planning a trip. We were going to make a run last week to get out some Yankee bucks but it turns out that Xoom seems to work fine for the purpose (when you factor in the price of the ferry ticket and so forth). But yeah, I think
