Look into John Rawls' theory of justice. It'll answer a lot of your questions.

Can someone explain this to me like I'm seven? My maths just isn't good enough. I've read Pinker's Better Angels and I've read the unsatisfying letters that Taleb wrote in criticism. Taleb seems to have a chip on hi

Though I recently found out you can get it at a bourgie EV restaurant, I regularly frequent a joint in Brooklyn that will make kibbe naya (Lebanese lamb tartare, essentially.) You have to call ahead and you have to know the guy. It was the

Yeah, I just had corrective eye surgery and the Kindle is just as easy on my eyes as a book. Easier, even because I can enlarge the text when my eyes get tired.

A decade ago? Hell, that still happens with frequency. I don't know how many times since I moved out to Brooklyn that I've pulled the "hop in back and misdirect" strategy. I'll sit in a cab and call 311 and put the

One of my favorite things is when my dog gets near an open pump in the summer. The little maniac makes lunges at the stream(s) with his snout and then backs off, then repeats the whole routine until he's pretty much water-logged himsel

Just looking at data and making assumptions is no better than astrology. For a supposedly scientifically literate field, tech makes use of a TON of pseudoscientific hand-waving.

Yeah, I'm feeling that it'll be a bit like the late 90s/early 00s at least from an exchange perspective. But coupled with a pretty inevitable housing bust on a massively inflated market. . . . It's going to be tough goin

On the upside, the AUD will probably shit the bed now. Which is nice, because I'm more than happy to come back in a year or two and pick up a little terrace in Newtown for something resembling a sane asking price.

Fun fact. There are still a few pigeon keepers in Brooklyn. It's an entire subculture, complete with political intrigue. They're known to "kidnap" each other's birds and hold them ransom. Even funnier is that there

I found risk aversion in Australia to be incredibly pervasive across all aspects of business. I started a boutique software company in Sydney back in '06 and was fortunate enough to have partners that weren't risk averse. That ri

Steven Pinker's Better Angels of Our Nature goes over all of the probably reasons for this in its general survey of the correlation between violence and civilization. And he's mentioned for the Leviathan theory, but that is only

The Ruby/Rails hype cycle started like ten years ago. Rails is one of the most widely used web app frameworks in the market. Ruby's been around for twenty-odd years and has gone from being a niche scripting language to one that&

Reflux has that with the `.joinXX` functions. Perhaps there's something else there? I guess I can see some organizing factor but doesn't the dispatcher get really large in a complex application?

I'm surprised Reflux wasn't mentioned. I really don't see the need for a dispatcher, but perhaps I am missing something important.

It was a classic (very simple) hero's journey that strung those scenes together. And the scenes were pitch perfect riffs on eighties action movie tropes. The whole thing was incredibly on point from start to finish.

That reads like a right-wing mirror image of critical theory—a logically flawed mess that attempts to hide its defects with a long-winded obtuse writing style.

This is the only way to cook meat. (Aside from special purpose stuff.) I thought I'd end up using my sous vide maybe once per month and I probably use it three times per week. It's perfect for fish, pork, duck, and of course steak

I don't think it's a coincidence that hitchhiking became vilified at the peak of the mid century crimewave. It well and truly _was_ more dangerous then. Now, even though the crimewave has subsided, people have scare stories from i

What would you say the major differences are with Flummox? It looks pretty straightforward but Reflux seems pretty lightweight as well. Just trying to figure out if it's worthwhile to switch an early stage project over.

I doubt the accuracy of that table. It's been a number of years since I regularly took CityRail but I remember the price of trains in Sydney to go up pretty drastically the further into the suburbs you got. Like, $5/ride and such.

Odd because we didn't experience an increase in violent crime during the recession, in fact it continued to decrease. How many of those studies look at data after the great mid century crime wave had settled? As for evidence that jobs
