Sure, I understand that, yet "everyone" has wifi already, and even in the streets you receive a decent number of wifi signals... There might be a need for longer range IoT comms (in cars, etc) but for urban use, WiFi would be fine

It's sad there's no "Out-Of-Band" WiFi (say 1kB/s unauthenticated WiFi), or is there such a thing in the standard already? Think SMS for WiFi, cheap and very lightweight, yet an immense benefit. It would be easier t

At least in France, it's often said that diesel is cheaper because when the country bet on nuclear power, it had nothing to do with heavier fuels produced in refineries (no oil power plant)... so they lowered the taxes on diesel. They

Can you time the copy again, with an index on the timestamp this time? just out of curiosity. Also, not sure it's wise to build system software (proxy) just to log data instead of using what already exists. Because that proxy you write

That still means changing the whole architecture of Facebook, Tweeter and the likes... from a replicated system to a cached geo-centralized system. Also, it doesn't bar the NSA from consulting the information from the USA... which is s

Are you suggesting hosting a web app in the USA and its database in Europe makes no difference? There's also the problem of bandwidth (if you can't cache data locally).

I'm not talking about replication for disaster recovery, but replication to avoid intercontinental round trips. If my actual name is stored in Europe, my US friend must request the data from the USA just to show his friends list on an

If it's just a problem with Facebook's contract, all is well. But the article says "Facebook and Twitter [...] could be forced to host European user data in Europe". That's way more agressive than just a contract ch
