> all of the above is sourced from Cochrane: Britannia’s Sea Wolf by Donald Thomas Thats pretty much what they did. I do sort of like the idea of sharing less-than-perfectly-polished writing. But it does make for an odd read.

Adobe acrobat (and maybe reader) is really the only app that fully supports the full PDF spec as understood by the authors of the spec. There are ridiculous parts of the spec that allow support for things like JS, etc.

Better NHTSA testing/benchmarks/regulations would help the entire industry at this point. After the cruise debacle, we need more than just, “our internal metrics show.”

I am still reading but have the exact same question. The production value is high. The url is simply “retool.com/pipes” (I.e. not just another blog).

This is quite interesting because you can imagine that lobbyists would argue that standardization would “stymie innovation.” If F1 does it why can’t you?

This can be used as a dark pattern. If you want a user to use a particular setting (e.g. “Customize my ad experience.”) you can just make it unclear which they’re choosing.

A big offender here is (was?) instagram’s privacy settings. I recall trying to help my mom turn her profile to be private and we were both confused: does the blue mean it is private or not?

Yes, I keep on thinking that a premium market will develop for Toyota and Honda cars from roughly ~2006-2010. Those cars were the height of internal combustion technology without all of the electronics.

It depends on how realistic one is being. In a perfect world? Maybe. In the actual world? I think a lot of people get to a point in their career where they want a solid, steady paycheck with minimal drama. There are also a lot of “deep tech

One area where BMI is known to not be as accurate is people who have high muscle mass. I don’t think this can explain everything but it seems like it could contribute to understanding this statistic.

To elaborate: the easiest way to stay apolitical is to never say anything. But that’s no way to live. Depending on the context you may want to be more or less opinionated or - alternatively- know when to say nothing v saying something.

In what context? Work? friends? Family? I don’t think it is possible to always be apolitical. I think there are many instances where you need to be aware of what sort of political statement you are making.

There was also a piece in the nyt this morning [0]. Seems like someone was rushing for a scoop (what scoop? This is old news.) or someone’s PR firm is getting results. [0] https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/30/bu

YoY price inflation (cpi) was 3.7% in August. The fed does not think price inflation is under control by any means. Wage inflation will only peak if workers roll over and let employers take advantage of them.

Waymo crashes are far more common than I would guess given the news coverage of Cruise's issues. I can't see the full article, though, so this might be a reflection of 1.) larger fleet, 2.) longer time running in the city.
