Time is so fleeting, and so precious. It's criminal to stuck in cube for a large portion of that lifetime. Every so often, stop, just stop and think about what's important. Best to do it now, rather than regret later.

This is likely because you don't have your network setup correctly. You need to be licensed, sorry activated, to run much other than control panel or desktop. I used NAT and had to reboot a few times to get it going in Virtual Box. Eventual

Damn! That's the configuration I have, and it hung, then went through once I ran it in compatibility mode. Obviously something broke, or failed because the tools are not fully working. Did you tell VBox it's Windows 7? And what version of V

I have the 64-bit Dev Tools edition running pretty good in VBox. It doesn't like the VBox Tools, though they partial install. No seamless mouse sadly. It does seem to hang up rather a lot, but it clears after a minute or two and keeps going

Yes, exactly right. Your ideal strategy is raise the price to what the market will bear, then back-off a little bit, if sales start to drop off. You should also take note of all feedback, since your customers are the people that are willin

Ah, interesting, do you have a source on this? I'm very interested to see how much emphasis they are going to place on the new HTML5 / app style of development. I expect Win32 MFC, ATL etc., will live on forever in some form, but Windows 8

Plus there was always investing in other companies, spreading capital, creating new sources of wealth. Wrong period, but wasn't Jay Miner financed by some dentists when designing the Amiga, initially? This is the sort of thing I am thinking

Totally agree with your point. Look for the stay-at-home dads with working wives and you'll find the people who have more time to spend preparing food and eating together, than money to go to restaurants, or live on take-outs.

This really interesting, and somewhat depressing at the same time. I also remember the 'big-bang' in the UK, and the rise of the yuppie, "loads-a-money" types etc., which corresponded with the start of my working life. A few years ago, I ha

I think there's a move towards home-schooling, at least here in Texas, partly due to the broken-ness of the public school system. Sure, there's some great teachers, but there's also a large number who garner poor results year after year and

I use three spaces. From left to right, browsing space, then Xcode space and finally gimp and inkscape space. Control and an arrow key moves me to either of the other two. Sadly, Lion doesn't seem to wrap around, so this isn't supported. It

Thanks for linking that, really neat. I just ran it, and after configuring to use command-arrows to switch spaces, it works really well on my MacBook. In fact, rather than hitting the side of the screen, just a gentle tilt to the left or ri

Yeah, I feel like that almost all the time. You have to write a LOT of code before it flows perfectly from the fingertips. That's the key, write lots of code and be aware how you can improve. Here's a few points that have been useful to me:

I have a 16c as well (I assume you have one), and if you're a Mac user, the OS X calculator is pretty nice and can be configured into horizontal scientific and programmers RPN modes. Someone put a lot of love into it. Kudos.

My favorite example of this was some code that would always fail in production, but test out fine for devs. Turned out the developer had used static variables to communicate between runs of dynamically loaded modules, which sadly, you get d

If #1 is pervasive throughout an application, e.g. badly done SQL code, then it can be a pain to get performance up, but with #2, there may be no way to get the codebase back under control, or bring new developers on at a reasonable pace. I

Yeah, I'm so happy with Snow Leopard, that this is just not a big deal to me, and let's face it, unless it's mind-blowingly good, like an XP or a Tiger or Leopard, a set of big changes is bound to make a chunk of people unhappy. My Mac Mini
