Imagine merging thousands or millions of records into disparate timelines by various attributes, merging similar records, or overwriting, changing lengths... This is the sort of stuff that filter/map/reduce is really really good at, but als

Picture several thousand lines of C++ being reduced to 27 lines of Clojure and you get an idea. That's not to say that you couldn't do something similar in C++, but I've met like 4 really really good C++ programmers in about 15 years of pro

Enterprise programming would have been a LOT more fun if I'd been allowed to use filter/map/reduce directly, instead of writing thousands of lines of C++. In the end, I just resigned to go and do iPhone software for a while. I suspect any o

I'd suggest that the podcast is worth listening to. It's slow moving, but once Siracusa gets rolling, you can taste his frustration with the crappy job that Isaacson did with it. edit: typo.

I actually made myself a Broadcom airport card, for less than $20 and it's faultless. Atheros cards have always worked great for me too. The only time I've ever had WiFi problems is under really really old versions of Ubuntu on a ThinkPad.

This is kinda sad, but flying to NY and buying it on 5th Avenue would probably get you exactly the same computer for much less! *Aside from the keycaps of course.

I fixed my WiFi not reconnecting by zapping my PRAM. Cmd-Opt-P-R on boot and hold down until you get a couple of loud bongs. Yeah! I know! First time doing that has ever fixed a damn thing for me, but not reconnecting to my WiFi was startin

You can't blame Lion for not having a delete key! It's a hardware choice. Add a wired USB keyboard (I use the long Apple one) and there's a perfectly functional delete key, right there! What you can blame Lion for, is the fact that Xcode4 c

I've managed to get used to most of the new stuff in Lion, but the screwing with the File save stuff is just mind-bendingly awful, and has broken things as simple as trying to re-save a text-file or image from a read-only folder to a read/w

Here's what the mail box toolbars look like in the old versus new, and the author does cover these. I think these pictures speak for themselves. One is a model of clarity and the other is a context-sensitive, icon-infested mess. http://img

All the articles I've seen about this provider say that the price is low because they expect to utilize WiFi for a significant proportion of calls, not supplied by Republic, but supplied by the cable or DSL provider, in my case AT&T UVe

It's highly likely that without Jobs, we wouldn't have had the awesome velcro that holds the top cover of an Apple II closed. For those that haven't had the privilege, first move the monitor and Disk II units off, then grasp the back of the

Normally, I enjoy these kickstarter ideas, but this is a ZX Spectrum flavored abomination. http://www.old-computers.com/museum/computer.asp?c=223&s... My wife's reaction was: What is that? Why? It doesn't make any sense...

I pretty much just get my wife's IM messages via Adium / Growl. Growl lets me scan them to see if I need to switch workspaces to respond, and if I don't, then I don't break flow. Nothing much else bugs me in Growl on any regular basis.

:) Yeah, I'll take a look at your link, but the new styles are surely reminiscent of the awful YUI, which much as I love Crockford, I'd have to write off as crap, due to its convoluted programming model and wretched bad appearance and inef

Someone at Google needs to get a Goddamn clue and look at a UI design manual. What the hell are they thinking? Has Larry let the MBAs get out of control? There's clearly something wrong, as no sensible, actual user of these products surely

How much would they need to bump them to get on a par with the 12 and 16-core MacPros? Is it a lot, or has Sandy Bridge narrowed that gap? Perhaps, and this is worth a thought, that Apple could push xgrid support, if it's not already there,

The 60 Minutes interview passed over the Apple II very briefly, but it was tremendously significant, for being one of the first computers popularized with a killer app. Obviously, this wasn't the be-all and end-all, but VisiCalc did for sur
