On the other end of the spectrum, there's an awful lot of people who believe that they're simply 'bad at sports'.

I think it's a reference to how Apple routinely claims things as new or revolutionary during their keynotes, even when they've been available from other manufacturers for some time.

I've also switched my browsers search bar over to Bing. Overall, I prefer it to Google. Random notes: - Searching for Cocoa class names doesn't give me the API reference as the first result. This is the one thing that's been annoying me.

This strategy might work with ego driven programmers, but I don't really want any of those guys on my team in the first place. I want perfectionists who know how to ship.

Unfortunately if you only think of usability as 'the labels are lined up perfectly', you won't create good interfaces.

It's almost cliche to say that we need more females in tech. Most of the time, these kinds of arguments center around the disproportionate male/female ratios and talk about how we might correct them. They never really say /why/ we need mo

Please don't risk your life stupidly. In any case, cruise control involves things like accelerating when you're going up hills to maintain an stable speed, not just keeping the gas pedal in the same place.

I used to think that a metadata based file system was a really bad idea until two things happened. I read Jef Raskin's "The Humane Interface" and I watched people use web apps and 'database' apps like iTunes. In THI, Raskin covers the idea

I have this basic test that I apply before I add a feed to my RSS reader. I arrive at some site by way of a link. If the story is good enough that I think I want to read more by the author, that's exactly what I do. I click the 'previous'

I'm also a Mac developer. I've been building a couple of applications while I'm in University and it looks like I'll have a good steady income to grow the business on once I'm out of school.

I recently rewatched a WWDC session video about designing user interfaces where it was mentioned that right-aligning labels allows users to scan through and fill out forms quite a bit faster. Aligning the colons seems like the same kind of

I'm working on porting a desktop app over to Cappuccino. It's important to remember that Cappuccino doesn't include all of the components found in the Cocoa frameworks yet. This makes it a little hard to port an app over directly. For exa

I'm currently reading "Halting State" by Charles Stross, it contains some good scenes showing the characters interacting with an ARG. Not necessarily research material, but it goes to show how playing an ARG could fit within life.

This goes to show the value of actually watching users when they sit down in front of your system. Even though 'Click Start to Shutdown' seems unintuitive to all of us programmers, the usability study showed that it's what people expected.

I'm looking forward to spending my weekend with Cappuccino. My main desktop product is developed in Cocoa, but I'd like to expand it onto the web and the iPhone. Cappuccino looks like it might handle the web side of that quite well. I tri

As a consumer, nothing. As a business, hosting/mail/sourcecontrol accounts, and the big one is the ADC membership. Sure, you can get the devtools for free but the WWDC videos make it worthwhile around a new OS release.

Off the top of my head, I'd say that C is used for systems programming due to direct addressing of memory via pointers and it being as low level as you can get without getting into machine specific assembly. Speed is more of a byproduct of
