One thing to keep in mind is that older devices (ie CRT monitors) usually had lower PPI than modern ones, so you could get away with smaller font sizes and it still looked readable.

Relevant Elon quote: > The acid test for any two competing socioeconomic systems is which side needs to build a wall to keep people from escaping? That’s the bad one! Just replace socioeconomic system with social network!

I feel like Mac OS 10.3 was the peak of MacOS design, but then again that might just be nostalgia.

They mention the fediverse in their onboarding flow, so it seems like they’re somewhat serious about interoperability. I’m really hoping that this will be the push needed to make ActivityPub social networking go mainstream.

My hope is that with the rumored Mastodon interoperability, I can create an account on Threads, keep my entire Instagram social graph, and then move to the Mastodon app and never look back.

Yup, despite Facebook's best attempts to ruin it. (No one wants to have products shipped from scammy sellers, Facebook, please stop making that the default search option.)

While they're currently experiencing some pretty serious slowness and glitchiness due to sudden popularity, I'd argue http://lemmy.world is the best Reddit alternative we have at the moment. It has a fairly large varie

You're not wrong that the UX is pretty bad, but I don't think there's likely to be a better open source Reddit clone coming along anytime soon. The devs are fairly active so I'm hoping it'll be fixed relatively q

A proper "beginners guide" shouldn't be this long, IMO. It should just explain what Lemmy is in one sentence (ie, an open source clone of Reddit), and then provide links to one or two large instances with open signups.

It's frustrating to me how many people are upset at Meta for releasing Llama (not on HN, but mostly off-HN people.) Like, do you want big tech to control all AI tech? Meta releasing Llama was much better than the alternative.

The article is fairly hostile to Reddit, I'd say. Consider this excerpt: > As Reddit flexes its control, it’s playing a risky game ahead of its long-gestating IPO. Even though many third-party apps will likely go away, Reddit’s atti

Exactly! The problem here is the predatory nature of student loans. A bit of forgiveness to them is a band aid that will do nothing to prevent the problem from just happening again. Personally, I think the cost of college should be capped,
