I myself am not actually sold on the noSQL movement, at least not on the idea of ditching SQL entirely. It has its place, but may not be the best solution for every problem. That said, on the authors complaint about having to restart cassan

Didn't he? "Has anyone ran benchmarks with MySQL or PostgreSQL in an environment that sees 35,000 requests a second? IO contention becomes a huge issue when your stack needs to serve that many requests simultaneously." my answer to this p

I was going to mention the same thing: there isn't even a mention of the word concurrency in the whole article.

It's also worth considering that most big sites have more web servers than MySQL servers, and I'm sure Digg is in that boat as well. Doing your sorts on 20 front end nodes instead of 2-4 MySQL servers is obviously going to help improve perf

I'm not so sure about that. SO users are quick to answer simple/easy problems but those are never the ones I need help with. Ask a question that requires a lot of expertise and some effort to answer, and it's nothing but crickets chirping,

That's exactly what I (and the author of the article we're discussing) meant, I find it surprising that there is any confusion on this point.

I disagree with points of this article, and I'm not sure about the premise. I think Software Engineering is not as well defined as it could be but I think it is getting better. The book Rapid Development by Steve McConnel goes a long way in

Programming is about problem solving. A good portion of system administration is also problem solving. I know several programmers who are excellent system administrators, and a couple of sysadmins who are OK programmers (but they don't real

I did, but I still don't see how redis and MySQL differ in how they handle either type.

How is that any different than how you would do it with MySQL? If both products have the same solution to the same problem (handle it in your application) then why aren't they on the same edge?

Can anyone explain to me how redis supports partitioning? I'm still learning but so far I haven't found any support for it.

There are a bunch of alternative PDF readers, I don't know if they are all full featured but I have never run into something that didn't work for me in Sumatra PDF or Foxit Reader. Lifehacker did a roundup a while ago of PDF reader alternat

It's unlikely Ars has any direct control over their CPM; its likely determined by an algorithm that already takes CTR into account. It would be interesting to see the internal Ars numbers to see what happened to theid revenue after ad block

As someone who works on a site largely funded through banner advertising, I can confirm that this is true; CPM is tied directly to CTR. A higher CTR means not only a higher CPM but also higher quality ads, so it is in everyone's best intere

I think the choice should be up to the reader. Especially in texts with figures, tables and illustrations, there's a better chance of being able to see an illustration and the text describing it on the same screen if scrolling is an option,

It certainly seems that the NoSQL movement is largely fueled by two facts: 1. MySQL sucks 2. Oracle is expensive I'd love to see Postgresql get more attention, as I feel that they have scaling up and scaling out handled fairly well, whereas

"Facts" stated but not backed up by anything aren't worth much. "I personally measured..." is a worthless comment if he doesn't show his work (i.e. his tests or claims are not reproducible at all).

I believe it has to do specifically with how drawing to the screen happens; if that has to go through the browser, then it can't utilize hardware acceleration. One interesting test we did recently was to make a very simple flash app that dr
