I am generally not in favor of DRM for anything /purchased/ but for rentals, especially online rentals, I think it makes perfect sense as long as it's reasonable which in the case of Netflix it seems to be. I'm not required to own a special

Our sysadmin insists on using numbers to name systems, in combination with an abbreviation representing the OS. For example, RHL015 is our 15th server running CentOS (Red Hat Linux). It's quite maddening!

I sure hope so, because that's exactly what I did. I got an automated response that they have a massive backlog of support requests (suprise!) And it'll be 3 or so business days, so we'll see...

Although I agree wholeheartedly with this article I was a bit disappointed going in, I though it was going to be related to an improbability drive...such as an infinite improbability drive. ;)

Yes, I think a huge part of the problem wih frameworks for a lot of programmers, myself included, is a lack of control. The framework takes control and you have a certain set of ways to modify its behavior. If what you need to do isn't some

I've personally never encountered a PHP framework that meets that definition.

Exact same thing happened to me. Disappointing, to say the least, especially since I couldn't find any info on the site that said that was the ending time.

I agree, for me owning a home is about quality of life and having complete control over my housing. When my fridge started going south, I replaced it. When my girlfriend's fridge started making loud noises and running constantly, she compla

For me the FAQ was empty, maybe a compatability problem with Android's browser. I'll check it out on a real computer.

To some extent that's true, but even with those solutions I think it's most convenient to manage your windows across multiple monitors. Perhaps I'm biased because I've never much cared for virtual desktops. I just tend to get confused/distr

SOAP is ridiculously complex, which makes it annoying and slow. Rest has its own set of problems and annoyances, including lack of compatability with browser plugins (because browsers don't expose the http codes), and the awkwardness of t

Honestly I think more, smaller, monitors are better than fewer big ones. Given my choice I'd happily take 3 22" monitors or even 2 21" monitors + 1 19" monitor if push came to shove. I can usually see all the code I need in one 21" monitor

Can someone shed some light on why the water needs to be released into the sewer systems at all? Instead of recycling someone else's water, why not turn the pipe around and recycle their own? Does it take too long to cool back down to a usa

Are you interested in actually developing the software, or building a team of people who will develop the software? If you see yourself in a development role, the CS path is a good one, as long as it has some Software Engineering mixed in.

Earth is a great place for our type of life to pop up, because out type of life is well adapted to it. Imagine a puddle somehow gaining sentience. It would likely be amazed at how well designed its "world" was: the divet, slow draining and

Am I the only person here who hates htop? I just can't get used to it. The lack of labels and relying on color coding to convey information just obfuscates things for me. I still use top for that reason.

I had the same reaction. Unit tests mean you have twice as much code to change when requirements change. And in my experience, whenever a unit test fails you have to spend a lot of time debugging the test itself to make sure the failure is

When Palm announced this, I thought it was a brilliant move. It took our team less than half the time to develop our WebOS app as our other native apps, and it's more stable than when they were first released. The downside is mostly perform

I mean robust in terms of being able to deal with a wider range of circumstances. Perhaps smaller means that in general (don't really have an opinion on that), but in the case of Redis vs SQL, Redis is less robust by design. That's not nece

Redis does less, so there's less to understand. It's a simple tool that solves less problems. Less scary? Yes. Less robust? Definitely.
