I feel like Elixir has a split personality: on the one hand you have libraries for anybody to use out-of-the-box with their specialty syntax and all (Phoenix, et. al.) but on the other hand Erlang/BEAM are heavy-weight backend developm

I do not write Elixir/Erlang programmers. But I do think that the actor model and BEAM solve a few issues that I face when writing complex backends, which I do. For example I have not found a language whose error handling I like - Go a

Wanted to add to the usual "why is BEAM not more popular" conversation that there is also Gleam [1], which is an up and coming typed language on top of BEAM. It has the more common C-like syntax and a growing ecosystem of librarie

Thanks for the feedback. What kind of product are you using it for? Any issues with library compatibility?

The article is not very well written imho but I love it when conversations about free markets come up because I certainly do not understand the free market ideology. Some people really love free markets and blame regulations for their ineff

Well put. The title and the points made do not seem to align. It suggests that it questions the validity of Amazon's ruthlessness but it does not.

As as ipaddr points out it seems this got promoted by an algorithm. But that aside I always felt like Django's music aged quiet poorly. A few country/blues/jazz and related styles from the first half of 20th century have. Big

Brett Scott is a great public money intellectual. Happened to be listening to this podcast with him yesterday. I know it has "blockchain" in the name but that actually provokes Scott to answer some interesting hypothetical questio

I loved the book but the story imo has not aged well. Too much of white savior going on and too much colonialism. I would not describe myself as "woke", I can see why the teenage me loved it, yet my adult self cringes too hard. Pa

What I find most upsetting is the return of "great leader" - some overconfident old man who loves power. Putin, Jinping, Trump, Orban, Modi, Netanyahu etc. are detestable phenomena that won't lead to no good. How did we get h

A search of whois for that website brings up an address in Iceland that a Google search (Kagi actually) seems to connect to scam websites? EDIT: and well the author's account is a few minutes old.

Perhaps this is an opportunity to ask somebody who might know about BSON performance. As a POC/stress test for work I added two multi-GB datasets to Postgres (as JSONB) and to Mongo (BSON). While trying to query approximately a hundred

It does not matter if you are "well rounded". If you can schedule something with a line of code then that is objectively faster to develop and maintain than to (for GCP for example): - setup cloud cron job - setup pubsub channel -

I am a lead on a small startup team and one of the biggest pain points is dealing with infrastructure. We have no dedicated devops person and much of that work falls on me and other people who would be better writing code. I think the cloud

But then you need to set it up. On small fast moving teams having something that just works from the code is a massive win and I'd rather not cross the infra/code barrier.
