That happened not because web3 failed but because mainstream redefined what "web3" is. It went from IPFS to blockchain to NFT. NFTs make exciting headlines, IPFS does not.

Hacker News' paradigm of "blockchain bad - I upvote" to me has been one of the biggest signals that the community is getting stuck in non-productive circle jerks.

The article feels unsubstantive. It starts out with a short sentence of personal experience, then just throws around some generalizations about "web3" startup culture and later goes on to the a small and weird niche of avatar NFTs

I am blown away that we, as human species, drive our world with advertising. It feels like cromagnon stuff.

Yeah, that has been my experience. Dependency injection makes code more difficult to deal with, read and debug without any obvious upsides. I am sure it can improve testing but, for example, in JS world Jest seems to do that just fine and a

Has anybody actually been in a situation where dependency injection was better than just modules?

I know it is really easy to disparage blockchain but in my opinion smart contracts can mitigate much of the startup buy-up problem. They allow describing a system as an autonomous protocol that is not "owned" by an entity. Yes, th

I send money across borders to friends an organizations via blockchain. And millions of other people do, especially in countries with volatile financial systems. I much prefer crypto to anything else in this case. Hearing "no legitimat

I do not think "crossing swords" is necessarily something aggressive, it could have been debate. I am quiet the blockchain-believer and follow and read Molly's twitter. Yet I do not think she should be unopposed in her views,

Well I'll be first to admit that my thing against trucks is a bit of knee jerk. To me they are big, loud, scary and expensive. I'm uncomfortable being around roads full of trucks, especially biking. Yet I know that a Mazda Miata w

I suspect that the lack of comments means that most people agree with the sentiment but put off watching the video for later. If true - it says something about the relative ease of consumption of textual content. I follow a political scient

I know Rust is very popular right now but as a back-end dev I always wondered what's in it for me. I never had to write programs where garbage collection was a problem and learning a whole new paradigm (borrow-checking) just seemed unn

For the sake of the Hacker News audience I wish "introvert" was its own category and not under "Personality Type". It is baseless pseudo-science but comes up in tech-related circles all too often.

    > Now who owns more ETH has more power... I would argue that that is false. Nobody can approve invalid transactions or maliciously alter the state of the chain. So in that sense, no they do not have more power.

I think NFT buyers are fully aware of what they are doing. Most of the NFTs sold clearly come with no utility except a subjective feeling of "onwership" and the buyers are aware.

Remember the .org fiasco [1]? Your domain is not your domain. Web3 aims to fix that. Actually there is like a half-dozen competing projects at the moment (ENS, Unstoppable Domains and Handshake for example). Yes you did build your own serve
