The thing is that satellites are planned with a lifespan which can include a fixed amount of fuel for adjustments like this. It's not too hard to attach a dollar amount here. I'm as big a fan of SpaceX as you'll find but cons

My favorite one of these is metastability[1]. Any time you have a crossing clock domain the fact that your ASIC works is based on statistics and not hard guarantee. [1] http://www.asic-world.com/tidbits/metastablity.htm

Yeah sorry, they could send ro.build.fingerprint instead if they really wanted to know what version of builds and devices out there are causing issues. I can see this as an opt-in but not as a silent, default behavior.

https://everydayastronaut.com/raptor-engine/ is a great overview of why Raptor is such an interesting development.

There's still some decent physical shielding of the underside of the pack(which runs whole body). It'd be interesting to see the long term impacts that would have on the frame/etc.

Yeah, I'm confused as well. Generally in a 10+ year old car you're looking at possible transmissions issues(or engine depending on the brand, hello Subaru). We're just about to crack 100k mi and 5 years on our EV with no sign

SRAM and DRAM are two totally different things. An L2 cache is just a huge chunk of SRAM, they take more die space and use a lot more power at the benefit of running with lower latency.

On the flip side Lua is a wonderful language because its small lib lets it go anywhere. We used to run a whole gamestate of a shipped title on PSP in a 400kb block allocation. I've yet to see that in any other dynamic language of conse

There's a great variant of this if you work remote. I send my manager a list of all the things I worked on each day, usually 5-10 items with no expectation of reply or action. Usually takes me no more than 3-4 minutes to write. This gi

Only place that I heard was cruncher from my time in gamedev was the animators who came to us from some of the VFX shops over in the movie industry. Still inclined to agree, the number of non-crunching gamedevs out there are shockingly smal

That's why dual motors are nifty, you gear them separately (front for cruise, rear for accel) and you get better efficiency, handling and traction.

Glad to see competition finally coming around. That said I still wonder if they're holding back here to not cannibalize other lines. The 0-60 in the 3.5s range is over a full second off Tesla's best and for a performance brand see

Pretty solid list, only thing I saw missing was binary representation for literals("0b0000_1000") which is really handy when working with micros or other things that use a lot of flags or bits.

We did this in gamedev all the time with arena allocators[1]. Generally per-level or at some other temporal division. That, in-place loading and fixed-size pools for things like effects covered 90% of the allocation tricks we did to get hug

The specs on the op amps aren't particularly impressive. The unity gain is 18Mhz which wouldn't be able to even keep up with a modern AVR clock(16-20Mhz). You can find discrete parts with similar specs for sub-$1. It's a neat

Broad sweeping statements don't do anyone justice. We live near the westmost tip of the US and have a water management plan for the entire county. We pay into a mitigation that manages the entire watershed.

Tesla still doesn't have a rival in charging network or software. Having arrived at more than a few broken chargers the former is going to give them a lead for a good while.

There's a lot more to preserving eMMC than just handling power losses. A lot of what proper SSDs is to do the right wear leveling to make sure that damaged flash blocks don't cause corruption. eMMC is a pretty broad term that can

Your phone will do this too, that's why sandwiching icepacks between your iPhone makes it do an iCloud backup faster. Lots of vendors disable thermal limiting during benchmarks to get better numbers.

Unless you're on a track you won't be getting usage patterns that kick in thermal limiting. If your planning on buying a car to track a 4 door, 5k lbs car isn't exactly the best choice.

No, because you don't do any commercial transmissions on ham radio. If you want to do that grab some Ubitqui gear or other Part 15 device and go crazy. Also you do transmit callsigns which anyone can look up and find out who you are +

It's many, many, many orders of magnitude difference. I haven't done the math but my hunch is you could fit the entire ham allocation from VHF down in a single 10mbit pipe. VHF is usually 1200bps per channel and gets slower as you

> Pactor is around 2.4khz bandwidth while voice is 3khz The whole reason that voice isn't allowed in the data bands is it's so wide. FT-8 is only 50Hz wide, Morse code is ~100Hz. In the space of a single Pactor you can fit 48 F
