No, I am not sure it is attributed to him, at least, not with any proof. Voltaire is often a good target for fake quotes.

Does it prey? I think scratchers / casinos / sports betting / online poker / more general kinds of gambling is far more addictive and malicious, because the dopamine fueled reward->attempt cycle is a far tighter loop

This is a weird take, very HN/Reddit. At best it misses the point, and at worst it insults the poor. Its not a "tax" - it's just fun. The odds are terrible, but the dream / "what if?" aspect of it is fun.

We have absolutely different perspectives here. I do not justify anything in terms of quantity of human life. The destruction of critters and wild plants to me is as painful as the destruction of human lives. Also, we rob future generations

Awful take. How are there so many bad takes on HN today. Is reddit down?

There's soooo many things like this on HN - why is it better than drawing the picture in something like google docs or lucid chart?

Wrong all over. Check the other comments, they are def not the same. The condescending and cynical tone also destroys any inquisitiveness. "Lay" people can absolutely tell the difference.

Uber won't ever 2x, let alone 10x.

I didnt say it can be built with 15, but at 2017, features peaked, and maintenance is much easier than creation.

I worked there for 5 years, it's not that complicated, Uber just made it way too overcomplicated.

I think your NYC centric anecdote kinda reinforces my point, in an old-man-yells-at-cloud kinda way. The eats usecase was supposed to be around delivery for places that did not already offer it. If you are talking about the eats experience

Uber is an example of a company that wants to be a tech company, but (1) really shouldn't (2) kinda lacks the technical leadership to really be one. It feels like the right call, around 2017, was to either: (A) double down and build a

That depiction of Babel is by Peter Bruegel, a fantastic artist but obviously just making stuff up (1563) vs supposed biblical occurrence (far before that - but probably not real at all). Its also far closer to the Colosseum, if we are comp

Companies switching to cloud? It makes sense why they do it - that layer of problems was solved for you, and solved well enough. Your company should focus on what it does best, theres surely tons of other challenges in the interesting parts

That's fair, I apologize. It struck a nerve because of how blase it was with dismissal, but I too am guilty of that at times, I suppose. Also, I am not close to the project at all - learned about it here.

Russian atrocities in Ukraine are horrific, but they are certainly not even close to the cold extermination machine and bureaucracy employed by nazis against Jews, Poles, Homosexuals, etc.
