Why not just release proprietary software if you want funding for your work? Selling licenses for using software is one of the easiest ways to fund software development since 1980. Customers have more respect for companies with straightforw

That example was given in the original post. That opinion is Raph Levien's ("One of my hopes for xi-editor is that the core would be lightweight"), so if that's the only example, the OP should have asked him directly.

I'm still not convinced of your claim that "package maintainers optimize for <5mb binaries at the expense of usability". I've never heard anyone talk about that. Do you have more examples?

If the software is open-source, it will just get forked in a branch that removes usage metric uploading. If you want to make money with software, just release proprietary software, not sure what's so difficult about this.

I agree that most anecdotal startup advice is BS, which is why I barely pay attention to it. What I'd like more of is textbook-like material offering terminology and detailed case studies. Simply knowing the common name for something (

This is really cool and looks/feels a lot like the Sublime Text minimap, which I use a lot. I have a feeling it might be abused a lot though, like scroll wheel hijacking.

You're right, I was mistaken. And if the function is in the same compilation unit so the compiler is able to prove that it's pure, it would also be able to prove that a non-const pointer is actually const.

Actually no, compilers can't assume that `foo` is const. var foo = 0; eval("foo = 1"); With that said, virtually nobody uses `const` for performance reasons, but for developer readability and avoiding mistakes.

Yes, there are many cases where the caller can optimize the dependency chain / order of constFoo(x); constBar(x); where it couldn't make that assumption if one function wasn't const.

This article is a reminder that many luxury goods don't have enough intrinsic value to account for their price. In those cases, marketing needs to actually add value to a product, not just inform people of the intrinsic value of a pr

How large do you think the design space is? Technically, it's enormous, maybe 8^15 possible melodies. But what about good-sounding melodies? That drastically reduces the space. What about memorable , good-sounding melodies? Most mel

It's not 16 notes but three notes. C B A. The first note is repeated for a measure, the second is repeated for a half note, and the third is played once. Yes, it's undoubtedly a coincidence. See https://i.cbc.ca/1.

Are there any cameras at a higher price with better stats, but still lower than $2k for a used Chronos 1.4GP/s? I wouldn't mind buying a $1k camera to get 720p 1000+ fps.

Yeah, it looks like you're right. I thought the fine was for Google's French offices, but it was actually filed against the one-and-only Google. I'm not even sure there's a French office or data center.

I'm interested to see who the first US-headquartered company will be. My understanding is that US companies aren't immune when dealing with EU customers, but it might be more difficult for EU governments to enforce the fine. Googl

I've never had a boss or customer say "I need those class names changed, and before Tuesday!" :) It sometimes helps achieve goals, but it's never the primary goal itself.

Interesting. I've pieced together something like this for https://github.com/VCVRack/Rack/tree/v1/include/simd in C++11, but it only works for SSE2.

Software compiled against glibc links to versioned symbols, which are backwards compatible in ABI and behavior. I'm unsure of the reason you experienced breaking software when upgrading your glibc version.

I'm wondering the same. I'd guess that 99% of science code that uses the GPU now depends on CUDA. The other 1% use other third-party GPU frontends which might also be tuned for Nvidia GPUs. I feel that it's good to use the AM

I think I accidentally erased a sentence in an edit... When working with a manufacturer's RAW format, there is a defined way to get the values (R, G, B, T_from) as a result of demosaicing. For example, in the author's photo post-d
