Well you'd need to fund the cost of a kernel driver signing certificate and get it through WHQL as well. That's just for a start. So this wouldn't be something you could build yourself.

I did hit an issue where 20TB drives require substantial (2A) current when they first spin up, but other than that, that's the plan.

Having done this for a few years, I can say that you should get a separate access point and leave OpenWRT for routing / switching only. I also have Mikrotik gear handling >1GBe duties.

Depending on where you are, there'll either be local auctions of surplus tech, or eBay / refurbishing stores selling these kinds of things. I always went for Dell Optiplex, but there are HP and Lenovo equivalents too

Just a warning with that one - if you unlock it, it will never receive another Sony OTA, and there's no re-locking. Probably less of a problem now that it's out of support. Sailfish was also really rough on it.
