Amb is implemented using continuations and so the problem of side-effects remains. If we don't consider side-effects then "tabs" just degenerates into "continuations". EDIT: Maybe tabs == "monads" + "continuations"? I don't know enough abou

Thanks - the articles are interesting. Windows has always felt to me like the work of several teams, each in its own area. I never considered this a weakness because that's "just the way it is". However, this thread has helped me see that i

I see - that is kind of neat, I suppose, because it simplifies the overall model. Windows does require you to learn and use a new set of concepts for each API. From your answer and krshultz's below I think I see the complaint. While parts o

Good example. I don't dispute the fact that the command line makes it easier to do some tasks. I've had cygwin installed for a while now and I use the command line a lot but its power on native linux may be much more. As you said though, it

That's an interesting perspective. I'm primarily a windows developer with little exposure to linux/mac and I've always found the windows API simple and pretty intuitive. But I have nothing to compare it with so I'd really like to know more.

Wow. That was insightful and sad at the same time. This guy can write! I've got a lump in my throat right now.

When did advertisments become about putting your competitor down? Heck even the Coke v/s Pepsi wars didn't stoop this low. If Apple can't market it's products on their own features and has to rely on this kind of negative adverts I'd say it

Kudos to you - I think you've done a fantastic job. Plus it takes balls to venture into a space that's dominated by the mighty Google :-) FEEDBACK: * The name sucks - especially the "go" at the end. "Duck duck" I can live with. "Duck duck g

I really didn't get this rant. The author seems to believe (without any convincing reason) that in order to understand a program you have to understand it's data structures which must be typed and set in stone. I read the article he's bashi

What I (personally) find very interesting in American schools is the "unpopular"=="picked-on" relation. I understand pg's argument that you have to work at being popular. In my (Indian) school, I was a typical nerd - I was poor, often wore

Disclaimer: I'm an Indian and I've worked on offshore developments years ago. I work in product development now and there's no way in hell I'm going back to outsourced projects but I'll admit to some bias. Outsourcing works. Most reputable

Have you tried reading the EMacs tutorial (C-h t)? That's how I started. And as far as I remember, it was pretty good at getting me up to speed. I also found it useful to write out my own cheat sheet as I went along. After that I kinda got

When you have a team size of only 4 people, I really feel you should target continuous communication. A weekly meeting just encourages each individual to "go dark". I'd suggest a daily 'stand-up' meeting. I've used this format when forming

From an Indian perspective (the article mentions India is a bit better than the US) I know quite a few women IT workers most of whom enjoy their jobs and are good at them. But I also know many more who quit - usually to stay at home and rai

My condolences. I went through the death of my brother many years ago and it was hard. Looking back, I did some stupid things and some good things. From my experience these may help you: * Acknowledge your emotion. Cry when you need to. * T
