Fun read! Makes me realize I should probably go reread Java Concurrency in Practice.

We do full testing before every release either way. There’s no excuse for not upgrading.

No they said that because builds of the OpenJdk codebase by the OpenJdk team are only supported for 6 months until the next version comes out. Builds of the OpenJdk codebase by other vendors are supported for other lengths of time.

Powershell is amazing. Just don't expect it to be posix. Using objects and structured data is leagues better than string parsing in posix shells imo.

Nice! It really isn’t hard to stay on top of it imo. The only thing stopping anyone from upgrading is their own company culture at this point.

I can assure you the differences between virtual threads and reactive is not a thousand.

You can use jit watch: https://github.com/AdoptOpenJDK/jitwatch

That is completely different from what I’m discussing. You can have millions of virtual threads without ending up in reactive hell. Even still without virtual threads what’s more expensive 2x the dev team or a few more servers?

I personally find this to be completely unacceptable. No one comes here to discuss with AI. Please don’t do this.

Even for the applications that need reactive I do wonder if anyone has actually done the financial analysis between the extra developers and development time needed for reactive vs just throwing more servers at the problem.

They have their own falcon jit and C4 low latency GC. I’d be interested how their GC compares to generational ZGC now.

I expect most Java projects to be built with mvn package or gradle build. It doesn’t mean it’s always that simple. Simple projects can be built simply. Complex ones are never handled by 1 tool. There are plenty of examples in Rust and Go wh

Yeah this comment is wild to me. Java’s debugging is so good I can debug a remote server from my local machine.

I think this is really just anecdotal to your experience. Don’t you need to install a specific version of a compiler or interpreter for every language? Isn’t trying to build any complex project a pray on the first try? I’ve worked in Go cod

>yes there are known CVEs, but is the server actually vulnerable? I ask this question every time some security guy scans my dependencies, they never can actually determine that and I'm forced to drop everything to fix it.

This is what I’ve found as well. The actual things are fixing a lot more bugs or reimplementing the state checks all over the place.

An interface is just a function signature. Perhaps it might be easier for you to think about as just a function: type MoviesApi = void => List[Movie] I guess the difference is the tracking?

Maybe I’m not getting it, but isn’t this just interfaces and implementations from the OO world? For example their movie one is: interface MovieApi { List<Movie> getPopularMovies(); } What are effects providin

I don’t think anyone I know would classify Scala as simpler. In my opinion Java is a much better language than Go. I can’t imagine anyone liking Scala would prefer it over Java.

Maven is generally fine. The only complaint anyone has is “xml bad”. Outside of that maven is probably (?) better than gradle. At least it prevents a custom scripting mess.

There’s nuance in programming. Both of these statements can be true. Var reduces boiler plate when you’re duplicating information in both the lvalue and rvalue. I’m in agreement that when the information isn’t in the rvalue that you shouldn

> var accounts = calculateAccounts(something)' Where did I write this? It’s almost as if there’s nuance in programming. Var helps when you’re duplicating information that is already known. Your example is clearly not that.
