Velleman's How to Prove It greatly helped my ability to construct set theoretic proofs, which better prepared me for Spivak's calculus and Baby Rudin. Hamkins' Proof and the Art of Mathematics is designed as a a good, less se

I also found this to be true. "Thought leaders", individual personalities as experts, etc. However: there are mountains of really good non-fiction books if you're willing to get a little boring. I've started digging heav

Yeah, because that's definitely what folks are concerned with. A/B testing of button locations, and not feed algorithms designed to manipulate users.

He's a smart, talented guy, but it takes a very different set of skills to break other peoples' stuff than it does to create it in the first place. George never had much patience for the organization of people -- he's got som

Scala devs are too busy wondering about free monads and F[Request[F] => Response[F]]. I am very pleased by http4s, Doobie, ScalaJS, and the whole ecosystem, really: https://http4s.org

Yes, the U.S. Constitution protects free expression, so the U.S. government's hands are completely tied on this issue. Even if government officials personally think a site probably facilitates behavior that violates the law, actually

I don't know where you live, but I see many fewer plastic bags drifting like so many tumbleweeds since the imposition of plastic bag fees and taxes where I live.

I wouldn't be surprised if micro-credentials paved the way for this. Seriously: why would anyone pay $18-24K to learn calculus except 1. ignorance or 2. coercion?

"I felt I was constantly fighting the compiler/borrow checker/whatever. I just want to write some code, dammit" Well here's your problem. Type safety helps you avoid avoidable bugs. Try Haskell or Scala next.

As a consultant, my executive clients simply aren't helped by phrases such as big data. A big pool of garbage is still garbage. Instead, I've dropped back into the traditional vocabulary of data and analytics, and I talk about sta

How to Prove It is an excellent text. I didn't fully grok Spivak and Rudin until I worked through it, then the proofs all clicked!

The Scala ecosystem is super cool, once you're able to groc all of the neat stuff happening, sort the good tools from the bad, etc. Love http4s, scala-js, scalajs-react, doobie, cats, etc.

The problem is that actual work experience doesn't give you this. The more experience you gain shipping working software, especially in a senior capacity, the less exposure you're likely to have to the skills tested for in the alg

I have no idea what to do except be OK enough at the skill to get jobs, meanwhile using social media to attack the practice. I hate these god damned things.

These level designs for FFX are SO TRICKY. I never realized just how carefully constructed for the camera each map was.

It fascinates me how we've gone from the web as a tool for resisting censorship to the point where we recognize the need for guardrails because of how dangerous information tools can be made in the wrong hands.

This is a learning thing, honestly. Once you start thinking in types, it clicks: you're thinking at a higher level of abstraction, so the code is less important than understanding how the programmer put the types together in their head
