Yes, I did wonder about this. The call centers I've been exposed to would notice in a heartbeat if you weren't picking up the phone at all.

The rest of the article does go on to talk about more reasonable examples of people deciding not to go back to jobs, but I agree the Author would have been better served without 'Gavin' (from a credibility perspective).

Okay, I want the whole project by the end of the day. /s It just doesn't work. Complexity of tasks, scope, resources all make for something that is very hard to measure. I agree with your sentiment, but it's hard to execute.

No, I'm talking specifically about the first example in the article in which they describe a person that is deliberately shirking. I'm not interested in the technical solutions to this, they're abhorrent also. With regard to

A lot of the HN are familiar with balancing work for employers with time clawed back for side projects and startups. We do this a lot more on the level though, by only taking a enough contract work to make ends meet rather than what I can o

Fastmail is subject to Australian laws though. Australia a passed a troubling anti-encryption law[1], which pretty much means any tech company can be compelled to render assistance. [1]: https://techcrunch.com/2018/12&#

My GF has a M1 mac and is quite happy with it. I have a problem rewarding Apple with another purchase, given the dismal performance of this machine. The 2018 mac was a top of the line purchase. I think it came to about $5000 AUD if memory s

Apple as well. I have a 2018 15" Macbook Pro with problems: - The battery is dying - The touchbar flickers whenever it is 'off' - a hardware fault that requires the full top case to replaced[1] - Quotes of $400-1200.

This blog post by a VPN company is totally not biased and not written to promote their totally independent (for now) , transparent (for now) business. I mean they're not wrong, but it's hard to take seriously when they've got

Yeah, for the most part I use either time based tokens or my Yubikey. Where that's not possible and I can't avoid dealing with the provider as you mentioned it's Google Fi since they have a web gateway I can retrieve them on.

Google Fi has actually been reasonably useful despite the fact that I can't get it to work because I'm not in the US. They have a web messaging interface that I can collect 2FA from. I avoid phone based 2FA where possible, but the

You have to be able to prove you're a resident somewhere overseas though, and that you've broken your ties to Australia. It's more complicated for digital nomads that don't really have a permanent place overseas. Other t

This is a really interesting read. I'm not a US citizen (AU & NZ) and don't face the same problems when being overseas, but I definitely relate to it not really feeling like home now that I've been away for several years.

There are many things to criticize Amazon about, but I feel like removing a e-book that is being fraudulently sold is a stretch. They have to operate with the legal environment. In this regard we're not close to 1984. It's not eve

If the AU government didn't have such a denial / fossil-fuels attitude, I could even accept that. Unfortunately, with every other position that they hold it's hard to take that kind of explanation seriously.

While I think a hybrid situation is perfectly fine, there are also a bunch of solutions to this that don't require a permanent office. For example, co-working can facilitate some of the desired interaction while at the same time puttin
