But usually that high barrier is erected by incumbent companies in that field, whereas the "incumbent" in this case is mindshare and perception. I'm not so sure a sole individual or company could change that easily... it's like when slave

That perspective is from someone who lives in the USA. If you live in China, programmers are as hot a commodity as they are in the USA, but it's hard to find good programmers. I know of several companies in China trying to hire developers

element14 is always on backorder, but that doesn't mean you'll need to wait. They make 4000 rpi boards per day.

Strange, where are you located? I've bought the RPi on amazon.com before, pretty fast shipping. When in doubt, search on amazon. It's $60 on amazon prime which includes shipping. It's about $15 more than the usual places, but with the a

mcmelectronics, element14, and adafruit all have 3-5 day ship times. you can also buy on amazon.com if you don't mind paying a premium for faster delivery. pretty much everyone sells the rpi now, it's not hard to find. you might even find

I'm guessing much of the funding comes from the Japanese government. They funded the Chikyu project which resulted in a deep drilling robot they plan to reuse.

Probably not NFC though. You need a much smaller distance to read NFC (or a much bigger antenna). I doubt it could read a NFC keycard through the thickness of the door. I'm sure all that metal in the lock would act as a great RF shield t

Well, that one is only for the ethernet shield. I'm guessing you probably need more code for communicating over wifi or bluetooth and supporting wpa/wpa2.

I don't understand why you're so negative. It's a new product that has new benefits, and new drawbacks. The same could be said about the calculator when it first came out. You couldn't even compute logarithms on the first calculator mode

I think the main benefit here is that it works with your existing lock, so it could work on apartments, dorm rooms, office doors, etc. Those key code deadlocks have always existed, but never very popular.

I watched a friend write an app for the playbook, and he kept firing up a virtual machine to do something. Why would the dev environment need a virtual machine running every time you need to run a test?

Law makers are uncertain about the technology right now. When they're the ones sitting behind the wheel in one of these cars, reading a book while it drives, then we'll probably see new legislation removing the necessity of the driver.

When it hits mass market, there will be charging stations at every metered parking spot. You can pay 25 cents for 15 minutes, or $1 for 15 minutes and a battery charge. Parking meters already draw power from the grid, so all they need to

I doubt those stations will store the power locally. My bet is that the solar system pumps power into the grid during the day, generating $$ for tesla. Then in the night, it draws from the grid since power is cheaper then anyway.
