I guess it depends if you are a GV user or not. If you route all your phones through GV and only give out your GV number, you probably only use GV for texting. When I use my carrier for texting, recipients see it coming from a number they

Sadly not all software is posix compliant, there's still tons of stuff that just doesn't work in windows without lots of painful work. For example, if you use nodejs, around 40% of the npm modules that use native code doesn't compile prope

Surprisingly, there are quite a few prepaid data plans from major carriers in the US. For example, I'm using T-Mobile's 4G Monthly plan which provides me with 5GB of data for $30 a month, no contract. You can actually get a nano sim from T

I think everyone understands the reasoning behind preferring micro usb, but why can't engineers consider users when designing a new connector? I feel like Apple is probably the only company who would go that extra mile to make cables user

The same could be said about the first gen ipod, when compared against the current lineup of mp3 players at the time. The ipod didn't even have wifi or a color display!

What about the reversible cable connector? When was the last time you had a cable that didn't require looking at the cable before plugging it in? I know it's not really an innovation, but I don't understand why all cables can only have on

That's what people in semiconductors do -- they try to take a bunch of features and package it in a single chip to reduce costs. There are chips out there with temperature, accelerometer, and proximity sensors packaged in a single unit. T

I like that their new cables are reversible. I hate how the micro-usb connectors can only fit one way, and it's not obvious which way the connector is when viewing from a distance. I always have to squint at the hole & cable every tim

Design matters even when it's not art. There's a great little documentary called "Objectified". It's worth watching if you want to see a rebuttal for your opinion.

I don't really think it has anything to do with egos. Maybe this goes back to steve yegge's conservative vs liberal languages. clojure & python have communities that are much more conservative than ruby's. Yegge's argument that pytho

Should have ordered from element14 -- 4 day delivery time for me. I also heard that mcm electronics is pretty fast too. You should be blaming the distributors, not RPi. There are many distributors, so choose one that doesn't suck.

I guess you need to google "design patents". I feel like 95% of the people on HN don't know the difference between the two. FWIW, philip morris patented rounded corners on their cigarette boxes. If you think that's crazy, you should see

You can patent icons and fonts, why would a user interface be different here? We could revoke the ability to patent icons & fonts, but then there would be no financial motivation for companies to design fonts to sell.

I think it's only disgusting because it's a very visible case, and affects consumers directly. There are probably hundreds of patent wars that happen in the enterprise space that nobody reads about because nobody would understand even if t

So I'm curious, how should design be protected? Unique designs come from other places besides technology -- fashion industry files design patents on almost every "unique" accessory they produce. If we were to remove design patents, someth

Yes, because design patents expire, there's even greater reason to need to defend them while they exist. Design patents and trade dress protection often go hand in hand. In order to show trade dress infringement, one needs to show consume

> This isn't the case with patents You're confusing "utility" patents with "design" patents. You have obligation to defend the design patents because you'll need this to apply for trade dress protection.
