Well, luckily China does not control the language used on HN or in the world in general, so stole it is.

Ouch! That felt like a longer-than usual list of bugs, especially the memory mgmt bugs leading to arbitrary code execution. And a sizeable number of remotes (if you include webkit in that category.) I honestly don’t know what to feel; ”grea

Anecdata, but I did a master’s in bioinformatics a few years ago, and as part of that I spent about a year in a human genomics lab. I fully agree that the software used is really bad in general, but what is worse is the level of IT literacy

As someone who uses `jq` almost daily, this looks like a great tool I didn’t know I needed. Thanks for the tip!

I had a CTO like you once. Totally destroyed morale, made the best people leave, and created a toxic work environment where there was no trust in management at all. If that’s your goal, good work I guess.

How many EU beaureaucrats got their training in East Germany, I wonder? Or is it rather that they are too young and do not know about/remember what constant surveillance does to trust in a society?

Looks neat! The documentation does not seem to have any examples of the generated docs, though. I think that would be a good addition, because it’s a good selling point for the project. (I.e I don’t think I’d go through downloading and runn

I wonder about the psychology of the people (researchers) working on "innovations" such as these (other things also come to mind, e.g. face detection in crowds, optimizing fragment distribution from bomb/granade explosions).

Off topic, but please consider using the correct tense when talking about people. E.g ”Uses” instead of ”used”, otherwise you are implying that the person in question is dead… (After reading your comment I went to wikipedia to check that B

It’s just a great internet provider, which very much caters to techies. They supply the plug in the wall, you provide your own router etc. I guess the key is that they _are_ actually more expensive than the competition here, and they provid

This is the ISP that I’m using, and they are insanely great, imho. I especially like that you get a static IPv6 /28 for free, something that has finally made me learn IPv6 in depth. Still only on 1 Gb/s fiber though, because I hav

It seems there has to be some amendments to rules about releasing raw, anonymized trial data when the state is sponsoring development of the drug. Also, how can Pfizer claim that their "study" ends in 2023? Several hundred millio

IIRC, this is basically a U.S-only phenomenon. In Europe and most other places of the world, there is the understanding that a grave will not last forever. In most parts of Europe, the grave is actually "guaranteed" to still be yo

I decided to have a quick look, and this caught my eye: —- zx_cprng_draw() terminates the calling process if buffer is not a valid userspace pointer. —— ”Terminates the calling process”? That sounds different and interesting, do you know mo

I did a short stint in the automotive industry ~10 yrs ago (on the software/safety side) at one of GM’s brands. The lack of forward-thinking was absolutely horrible, as was the constant insistence that anything new would never work (yo

I’m slightly confused as to what the relation is between OpenJDK and Oracle JDK. Are they based on the same codebase? I was under the (apparently mistaken) impression that OpenJDK and the ”official” (Oracle) JDK were totally different imple

I got a /48, and I think it will take me a while to put all those addresses in use. I'm using 9-10 now, so while I've certainly started down the path, the end is not in sight just yet.
