I know why it works the way it works, it doesn't make it a good design, which is the point of this discussion

Adding an element to a nil slice works, but adding an element to a nil map panics. time.Time uses its own epoch incompatible with anything else. defers are function-scoped instead of block-scoped. The list goes on, these are just the first

This is an English-speaking forum, so yes, it is expected to use English and link to other stuff in English (or provide a translation). It doesn't mean that French (or any other language) is a bad thing, it just isn't the language

The whole idea behind computers has always been replacing people, it's the foundation of our industry. From the very first scientific calculations that used to be performed by people before computers, replacing human labour is what al

The US already threatened to invade the Netherlands not so long ago, worked like a charm. I'm pretty sure your scenario would be resolved just as easily

And what are ASML and the Netherlands in general getting out of it?

That plan worked very well for several decades which is more than can be said for most plans. Buying cheap energy when you have an opportunity to do so makes perfect sense, it's putting all eggs into one basket that was a huge mistake.

Fascinating stuff. The way horses shaped the whole history of Eurasia is just mind-boggling.

That's all nice and fun until you want to pass stuff around and some objects might outlive the arena. Do you keep the whole arena around, do you copy, do you forget to do anything at all and spend a few days debugging weird memory bugs

Memory arenas are a nice concept but I wouldn't say they're necessarily an improvement in every possible situation. They increase complexity, make reasoning about the code and lifetimes harder and can lead to very nasty memory bug

There is more to a language than knowing how to pronounce each individual letter. You can easily see it if you take any modern language, write a text in it down in IPA and ask a linguist unfamiliar with the language itself read it. It will

Is there anything wrong with Gecko architecture? So wrong that it's a major obstacle and cannot be changed? I don't know anything about its internals or browser engines in general, so I can't really comment on that, but what

No, it doesn't? It shows that Gecko can be updated and modernised without the need for a complete rewrite.

Why? They already have their own browser engine, what would they gain by creating another one? It's a browser company, not a Rust promotion company, from this point of view the decision was completely logical.

Another thing to note is that exactly the same bug can be made in Rust or go, both of which officially don't have exceptions. They both, of course, do have exceptions and just call them a different name.

I don't think that the lesson here is "exceptions are bad", the same kind of bug can be easily made without using exceptions.

It is a rather big problem, yes. You can absolutely get by without speaking any Dutch, I know people who have spent 10+ years in the country with just very basic knowledge of the language. Absolutely kills the motivation for a lot of people

I'm just curious, how is this different from sanctions? Cutting the cable hurts the economy, but nobody's killed or wounded, exactly the same way as sanctions are supposed to work. The EU is at an economic war with Russia, this is
