Redacted title. Maybe that's OK because the original title is really meaningless out of context. But at least it could mention Windows, as a Linux user I don't need to care. (Not claiming that Linux is inherintly more secure in th

Inside EU you vote in your country of residence or in the country you have citizenship. You can choose. If you move out of EU you vote in your home country. I guess the exact procedure depends on your home country, some allow mail ballots o

Yes, there are hard limits in the CFS. I have used them for thermal reasons in the past, such that the system remained mostly idle although some threads would have had more work to do. Not at my work environment right now, don't rememb

If you work in an emergency room or similar this could be a major nightmare. If you are a software developer it's best to take a day off or read a book (good for those who have bought a physical one). No reason to stress, isn't yo

Not a surprise the CEO does not understand why their network is down. Many CEOs of companies of that size think business is moving money around, doing acquisitions etc. They have no clue how their production works or where it could be vulne

I am surprised that there was still a new processor in 2017. I would have guessed it died nearly 20 years earlier. (I have used computers since more than 10 years before the Itaniun came out, or if you count the year of their release, 30 ye

I have also used a Tandem (probaby even a couple of years before the Cyclone came). But I wouldn't want one today before someone ports Linux to it :)

Exactly. The year of the ARM server has been predicted for more than 10 years. (Only topped by the year of the Linux desktop, but the latter has probably just been a joke most of the time anyway.)

I am grown up in Germany with the old wisdom that lunch should be the main meal and dinner should lighter and around 6 pm, 7 at the latest. Nothing after that. Whether that's correct or not I don't want to debate. There are for su

And why not run their own DC? It doesn't change anything fundamentally. A complex product is only as good as the weakest link. I have worked with various employers, some world leaders at the time. All of them had seriously weak links.

Why would you trust a sales rep? Even honest engineers cannot foresee the exact cascading consequences effects of such outages. Sales reps are not paid to be either competent on such issues nor to be honest.

Do I get it right that big distros like Ubuntu don't run this code because they use grub instead? Or does EFI grub still invoke that code path once it boots the kernel?

In data centers we are used to that IPv6 is cheaper, IPv4 addresses cost real money. If IPv6 only were cheaper for consumers it would make a difference for them. But maybe that's really only relevant for routable static addresses and c

I have no problems with turnstyle on my PCs. However, on my phone I cannot get past it. It's just an endless loop. The phone is an older model for the Indian market and the Firefox lags behind. So what, it's perfectly usable on 90

The root cause is the ridiculously small private address space in IPv4. Conflicts have a non-negligible probability. You might even want to use a container on the train, so the daemon is not the root cause of problems in this case. Using IP

I have an account, but have not been logged in for a long time. I don't fear missing a lot. Or maybe I don't have an account anymore. Didn't Musk announce that inactive accounts will be deleted?
