The search credit model sounds great. I would probably also pay Youtube credit. I use it too rarely that paying their monthly rate makes sense. The user experience with ads sucks, so I further try to reduce my usage. At least that's go

So what? Coming back to the poor analogy of democracy, the same fraction of voters could not run a government. The majority has never participated in any public manifestation. That does not mean we should all live under dictatorship.

It's still several years. I guess they just hope many phones of today won't be in use anymore and newer ones will have better compatibility. In practice some phones won't just work anymore, like in the original article.

Using different protocols for emergency call predates any caller location information. The main drivers at the time were network coverage (your SIM might have no coverage, but a network you are not allowed to roam for ordinary calls in has)

I would never trust VoLTE. It's a complicated beast full of compatibility issues. My phone supports VoLTE but on a recent trip through Europe it fell back to 2G for most calls. Edit: Those were ordinary calls. For emergency calls I hav

My 5 visits to NYC all happened before smart phones were ubiquitous and I never got lost. Of course the 3 am case might be an exception. I don't think the system has become worse, but the average user has just become more helpless. I r

I think it's the general idea that free (as in speech) software is "democratic". Even if the project does not do what you want you can always modify or fork, i.e. make changes privately for your own use or even distribute the

Maybe that's easier for a visitor. You make no assumptions how things are supposed to work because you don't know. You just follow the signs and announcements. Of course in case of disruptions/changes that requires that there

Slightly (un)related: For detailed subway track maps e.g. in Paris https://cartometro.com/en/ is a nice resource. The US is not covered well, though.

Youtube is one symptom that Google's business model is ethically and ecologically unsustainable. Process and store whatever nonsense to collect more user data.

Meta is not fundamentally better than Bytedance. Their business model is addiction combined with accumulating and misusing user data.

I have not used Google for a couple of years (with the exception of Streetview where they do not have any competition at all). So I cannot comment on the quality of their search results. They are a close to monopolist / duopolist /

I still have the i3 to sway switch in front of me. Screen sharing is a daily must in my work, so at least somewhat in the past there were too many warning voices. Fedora has a sway spin. I wonder whether that "just works" (TM).
