I study a lot . I’m ok at it —- certainly no great talent. I haven’t learned any methods worth a damn and not for lack of trying, but I feel I know things about my own learning machinery which has made me much better at it over time. In my

Is it really worth knowing if you use numpy or R style array ops in a daily basis? I spent a bunch of time with J. I think it’s really worth knowing the semantic layer — that you might write code like you write sentences is quite brilliant

I don’t mean this to come across as elitist, but if you don’t know what it’s like to be very good at your work to the point that other peoples decisions are often absurd to you, it’s not hard to confuse it for ego. Interpreting conflict as

I like to see success stories of this kind personally. “It’s never too late” makes me feel better about a life so far squandered. I think if he needs encouragement in order to do it, he probably isn’t going to do it. The only way it’ll work

Well I think there is a separate question of "does this work on a population level" versus "does this work for any given individual". I think we are used to "vaccine mostly works for everyone" type thinking. Ho

I think that the "whole story" matters, even if the bits you highlight are a large part of it. A bit like the relationship between epigenetics and the rest of genetics -- it rather changes how you interpret what you already know.

I didn't mention Penrose because he is an outlier. I mention him as an example where tool use disproportionally effects resultant performance, or conversely as an example of where a specific link in a reasoning chain effects the outcom

Kasparov had a nice line about this in "How life imitates chess". I'm paraphrasing but it was something along the lines of "there are lots of things that cannot be tought to you which you can nontheless teach yourself&qu

I think what’d be nice in these politics debates is to see people literally listing and then referencing the facts they are relying on to make their arguments. Not always, just for these emotional, shouty, hyperbolic threads.

I'd be grateful if someone could say a bit about why GNUnet is interesting. I looked at it some 4-5 years ago for some P2P work, and concluded at the time that it was entirely unsable. Has much changed?

I'm starting to use this at the moment. I've often felt that coding something from scratch is too labourious for the task, whilst a spreadsheet isn't functional enough to do what I need. I think pyspread hits the sweet spot.

I think a satellite product able to detect methane at a sub km resolution, layered by data products able to add meta such as the business it is related to, or show timeseries of emissions, would be splendid.

It sounds like you're saying that you did become slower. I.e. you weren't always slow. However, it isn't due to health. It may be constructive for you to figure out where the efficiency went. Perhaps start with when it went.

No, I was making a maths joke on count of the "orthogonal design" on their website. Orthogonal matrices are full rank and have non zero determinants, but I think it was perhaps a bit too well disguised.
