Indian education is based on rote memorization. That is why they think they can memorize their way to a degree in CS, and end up graduating while still not being able to program. So yes that one is another systemic problem. I live in the We

Well in this case, the landlord can simply allow the tenant to break the lease without such a harsh penalty, rather than playing this game which encourages people to use the law against them.

I think that's mainly only known to savvy people, other that perhaps general stuff about energy efficiency, which can go both ways in terms of gas versus electric or whatever. All things being equal in terms of cost, the average person

Conspiracy theorists are always going to weave conspiracy theories, though. That doesn't absolve the media or the rest of us from being the adults in the room.

That would certainly be the most likely kind of lab-based hypothesis. Especially considering the overt flouting of rules people engage in for other kinds of animal research, in the rush to compete for results and publications. But it would

I think it only counts as sticking one's neck out and being responsible if you deviate from the policy followed by the herd, whether it's to do something or do nothing.

I was surprised when the article didn't pivot to the typical immigration proposals and narratives. Instead it actually did some interesting digging into what motivates young people to choose their career.

I thought that quote was silly. If there's a useful point in there I'm missing it. Someone who can program a raspberry pi to control a robot may not be able to instantly debug your legacy spaghetti code with zero supervision on da

It makes sense that high taxes can simultaneously cause both those problems (the cost of employees goes up a lot even as salaries don't go up enough to attract workers yet), though the way they stated it was rather nonlinear.

Double edged sword. The shift from 20s to 30s also reduces attention from perverts and weirdos, just as it does from gentlemen suitors. And if someone joined a site back when they're a minor they often had to lie. Or if someone is just

When you're testing fragments of code by copying from one place to another to run, such as just pasting directly into a shell, indenting is an unnecessary hassle.

Ahem they said "older", not old. 50 is middle aged. Even if a person is a simple product of their times, as one gets older that gets increasingly interesting. Because the times change so much over the years.

The description looks like it's about competition, not just safety, akin to a class on poker. Perhaps the title is a bit of spin for defensive reasons.

There's two sides to every deal though. You can't presume something is necessarily a worse deal just because on the other side you are asked to give up some right. You obviously must compare it to what you get in return. In the US

I wouldn't call this an American tendency. Generally the word "international" is used for things which are expected or aspire to be truly international. If anything the American tendency is to restrict interest to the US.

Maybe? I don't know. My complaint is with your misuse of language to make a point. "Exactly nothing" means beyond zero is excluded. At worst you need to use "essentially nothing" or some such vague/weasel words

I think the point was the student will still fail. Truancy laws can force them to sit in a chair. But they can't make the student care about passing when their parent isn't holding them to any such standards.

I have noticed this a lot too. I'd guess is has to do with the importance of conferences over journals in CS (as opposed to nearby fields where journals dominate). Conferences tend to be more informal and forgiving of titles like that.
