That it's economical at market rates is kind of the point, though, right? Without the disadvantageous tax treatment of cleared land, you'd see demand increase, which means either price increases or labor being pulled from other ar

If you're going to go into it, you have to mention that you can be held for several weeks without being formally charged. That is to say, you can suffer a Japanese jail cell for almost a month (a significant portion of the strictly-enf

Those fraud/embezzlement executions aren't looking so bad now, huh? (This warrant-less data sharing increases contact with the police, which increases the chances of a fatal encounter, and the incidence of them overall. So, if it&

Just one in a long line of frustrating developments vis a vis broadband access for Americans. We're several decades removed from the billion-dollar giveaway to telecoms to get them to build out broadband access (at the time, DSL and ca

As a military brat, time is intrinsically connected with place for me. Once I leave someplace, it's often some time before I'm able to visit again, if I ever get to. I became aware very early in adulthood (maybe, unconsciously, in

Going forward? We probably shouldn't. Unfortunately, there's no way to go back to 2008 and build a rival dataset. Not without an elaborate space mirror/FTL craft/telescope set-up, at least. As to your question, if I may

I think there is a strong argument for the Library of Congress or some other public/quasi-public entity to archive Google Maps/StreetView data. Redevelopment has been an ongoing fact of life for much of the time I've lived in

What makes you think people want easy? /s I mean, clearly that would be best for creativity, for cultural robustness, for accessibility. Unfortunately, there are a lot of incumbents in all the spaces Flash touched who were ecstatic (

Is IBM a good example? Like GE, their saving-grace restructuring was basically turning into a giant corporate leach (one through financialization, one through consulting).

That's a good question. Since, IIRC, men in professional positions tend to score higher on perceived competence, it'd be actually even more damning if they didn't control for that properly.

I didn't say it did. The implication was that fear of unionization caused companies to take actions which degrades their workforce's capabilities as a side effect. That said, other countries with unionized retail seem to be able t

I've been on the other end, as a rideshare driver whose app frequently malfunctions/customers rescind tips/etc. When anything other than, "Get order, pick up, drop off, get paid," happens, you call customer service.

The turnover is yet another "feature." Lots of new people on staff makes it more difficult for them to learn the ways they're getting screwed by management and corporate, and to subsequently organize for better conditions.
