Just one in a long line of frustrating developments vis a vis broadband access for Americans. We're several decades removed from the billion-dollar giveaway to telecoms to get them to build out broadband access (at the time, DSL and cable, I believe), which they simply pocketed without missing a beat. We also could have had municipal internet services - if we hadn't let those same telecoms lobby to have them made illegal in much of the country (I also fault Google Fiber, which made waves just long enough to take the wind out of the sails of grassroot efforts before peace-ing out). Now, yet another rollback of steps we took in the right direction during the pandemic (or, rather, a rollback of the substantially less efficacious Biden-era program that replaced the pandemic-era program^1,2).
It's all so tiring.
