I love great design but in the case of "tools" if the design doesn't help the function and the productivity of the user - and there is something else out there cheaper that does (even though its "ugly") I have to go with productivity.

Using the "request for some restaurant recommendations" example; couldn't potential advertisers put a coupon some where in the "conversation" that might sway the requester to visit their restaurant instead of the other options?

I guess the question is how do investors know an idea is "obviously good"? Did anyone/everyone know that the pagerank algorithm was "obviously good" before they tested it? And if it was - did they build it/think of it in one day?

So are you saying that someone thinks of and idea - like a car powered by toenail clippings. They never do any research, they don't build a prototype, they don't even know if it will work but they want to sell the idea?
