"click a little [+] next to predict(p) and see it right there inline, with its argument replaced by p? Oh, that’s how that works, cool, [-]." While I like this idea, I fail to see how having to use my mouse to navigate to and click the +/

The only existing reason is that the two of them run on modern, enterprise accepted platforms. If you're hacking your personal projects in Lisp, you have no reason to switch. If you want to sling some Lisp/ML at work, well Clojure of F# are

I completely understand where you're coming from on this. I think the fight for free software is important but in this argument I take the realistic side. I feel like spreading a "free" environment where the backbone and majority of what yo

I don't think they are encouraging it, they simply make it obviously available to those new (often not tech savvy) Linux users. The adamant promotion of strict adherence to FSF beliefs is fine, but it's not going to help the platform grow t

I like how there's plenty of examples of down voting and not discussing the reason on this thread. I'm assuming you got down voted because it's just a flat karma value (I guess 200?) to allow down votes. They meant that your karma from subm

I don't feel that this post is fair. You can't say "we can't do solve real world tasks with functional programming because Haskell isn't practical." I'm sure this isn't a fair analysis either, but I think it's an accepted belief that pure f

I think the problem with F# is going to be competition from Clojure (which also runs on the .NET platform).

I was a little surprised with D being listed as one of the main contenders. I guess Clojure and Go were obvious suggestions. Go has the backing of Google and aims to be everything we want (fun/ease of Python, speed of C++) and Clojure is th

I don't know if I completely agree with this being the right thing to do, but how is this surprising or unjustified? They forked the project, had the guts to ask Oracle to donate the OpenOffice name to them and now are expecting to be able

I've personally found that game developers and "normal" developers are two pretty distinct set of people. I think the people of HN are not going to offer the type of feedback people writing games are looking for, so they post elsewhere.

Not to be rude, but StackOverflow is a Q&A site. Why would you not just ask the question you had there instead of trying to answer questions to make it to the chat rooms? You'd probably get enough reputation from that question to be abl

If the ideas you hope to prototype live on the web, this is a reasonable choice. However, I don't recommend using PHP as a general programming language. Python kind of works for everything, if you want to do web dev you can pick up Django,

Nobody walks into an IKEA and says "Hey guys, I've never used furniture before, what should I buy?" and unlike furniture, some languages are easier to use than others and are more likely to fit with what you discover later you'd like to do.

How is it 5-6 "good" answers? You get 10 rep per up vote. I'd imagine any "good" answer would get at least 1 vote, so I would say 2 answers, 3 at max. If they aren't willing to answer or ask a question to use a chat room structured around a

The problem is that SO wants their main source of incoming traffic to be from google. They want people to search for something they are trying to solve, and find an answer on SO from google. There's no way to expect that the SEO for chat ar

What about the possibility of the emergence of distributed version control? Perhaps this is causing less actual commits to the actual project, but not necessarily less code being written.
