In my area at least, hiring isn’t slowing so much, but the quality of the average candidate has cratered in the last 5-10 years. My opinion personally on this is that if you can’t find a job building software, you are suffering from some co

I disagree. As someone who likes PlantUML specifically because it lets me store diagrams as code, I too frequently end up spending just as much time trying to indirectly coerce the thing into the layout I want since it won’t let me position

I switched to VS Code a couple years ago for C# development as it was a faster editor than Visual Studio at the time. But now it’s all of: slower, less reliable and underpowered compared with more recent VS releases, so I’m back to VS prope

Alright, so first of all, the colors don't matter, they're just for contrast/legend purposes. Flame graphs come in all sorts of color schemes, not even necessarily yellow/orange/red. I tend to look at flame graphs i

Also knowing when the thought doesn’t actually count. Being “well-meaning” at the expense of another person is not love. It dismisses their needs as less important than your need to feel as if you did some kind act.

Agreed, and also they tend to be more guessable. Make a page available with an email address as the id and just watch the hackers use it to discover users of your service and attempt to log in as them.

I think the down votes are more because it’s a low-effort take, and this site (while it continues to slide in that direction, still) isn’t Reddit.

Not all AI is hype. We are just surrounded by so much AI hype it’s easy to forget things like Co-pilot didn’t exist just a couple years ago. To say there’s no value in having an assistant to write code at your direction is incorrect.

While I agree with the sentiment in your first paragraph, I think the idea of the second sounds like either working sub-optimally (fixing bugs that don’t need fixing) or else too much management ineptitude to overcome by fixing critical bug

It’s the same principle as investing in retirement. The heavier investments you make early, the greater impact they’ll have down the line. Only with a startup it often ends up being your time instead of money that is sacrificed. Think about

Why does it need to keep a long-term history, though? Isn't an ephemeral ping to get the current location enough? Or if you're trying for better resiliency, let it ping as often as you want but be responsible and only cache it for

Tangential story time! Several years ago (circa 2015) I was asked to build an app like FireChat by just the _oddest_ couple of guys I've ever met. They wanted an app where you could connect to other folks just by being near them. I nev

We’ve already agreed to certain food standards. The fact that people don’t follow them is enough for me to say we need something more strict. Is it a headset? Maybe not. But periodic training and availability of PPE aren’t doing the job eit

I’m pretty good navigating when I’m alone. If anyone else is in the car it’s like I’m on autopilot to “wherever my subconscious would like to go today.” So I use the GPS just to snap me out of it so I don’t miss turns.

There’s a subset of the second definition where you delegate all the future fixing time to some unfortunate young developers, both wasting their time and tainting their souls in the process.
