I did. And it is! The Hurl project definitely made Nap leaps and bounds better. Thank you for that. I wanted to take a different approach to how http tests are written (YAML, environments, parallelism, etc.), but for things that I already k

This needs a hardware component as well as an independent authority of some kind before I’d trust it. Don’t just tell me, “We asked, and they told us they were human ;)” I want independent verification from an entity that knows _who_ the pe

I've said before that we're entering an age where no online material is truly verifiable without some kind of hardware signing (and even that has its flaws). Public figures will have to sort out this quagmire before things get eve

Based on your other comment I would explore working in a field either with a mission or a small team that isn’t looking to get rich off of an idea. I left a software job for some of the same reasons you stated, but I found I could go back i

I liked the thumb gesture idea they presented in Peripheral. Enough movement to be discernible by a camera, but really only requires a small amount of energy and dexterity. Though ideally we probably want some sort of “force gloves” that al

I took a lot of inspiration from Hurl while building Nap[0]. My next goals for it are a UI and/or a VS Code extension. [0] https://naprun.dev

I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make anymore. You asked if people actually have these things. We do. Why does this need to scale? If you want to be pedantic, anyone can make themselves an activated charcoal water filter using fire,

Reverse osmosis water filtration systems that use activated carbon are pretty common, and least where I live. We have one under our kitchen sink, and so do my in-laws. Most refrigerators that include a water dispenser come with an activated

One truth that I think bleeds through well in the opening part of this article is that the difference between junior/senior is a very local concept. And it can shift over time within the same organization.

One place I worked was slow to deactivate slack accounts, so when I left I made a private channel #daves_cave and invited friends my friends to it. I would leave a short story or pithy saying now and then; it was fun until management got wi

The manufacturer should maintain a root cert that can be used. If that root cert is compromised then they should have a way of rotating keys if the vehicle and physical keys are present. Breaches then constitute what amounts to a software r

I... what the hell man? I'll turn 40 within the year. The only thing about my brain that's degraded is I sometimes find myself in the pantry with no idea why I'm there. I attribute that more to having 4 kids between the age o

I tend to format my plaintext notes as markdown to add a small amount of organization. I also have some light folder/file organization to break things into categories/topics/days, depending on what it is. That gives me a ni

Different people lose energy from different tasks. I.e. it may not tax your mind to have clutter around, but it can be a distraction for someone else. For some people (like me), clutter is fine but starting on a task takes a lot of energy.

This is the literal same term I use while weight lifting. I channel all pain and rage into the lift. It sounds crazy, but it works since a lot of athletic activity is about training your mind in the first place. My workout buddy says he can

I think, as you alluded to, this may be more of a personality thing, e.g. an empath might see that sort of thing as a great opportunity.

I learned while building Nap[0] that sometimes ideas just need to simmer. It’s like cooking. Sometimes there’s that one step that makes the meal work, like adding wine to a hot skillet. I had the initial idea for Nap over a Christmas break

Burnout doesn’t come from writing software in my experience. It comes from dealing with increasing amounts of bullshit in order to be able to build the right software. This isn’t a tech problem but a business one.

I resonate with this. I can even stomach the JetBrains subscription if I rationalize that this is the equivalent for paying again for e.g. the 2024 edition. And they are good about letting you continue to use the software as of your last pa

The chase for subscription revenue is destroying a lot of potentially-great software. Not just in pricing structure, but in how software is designed in the first place. Compare this to something like Magnet, which is great software that I u
