It's implied, I think, that the set of folks doing academia for pleasure are excluded from the analysis. In America, at least, the prevailing cultural attitude is "you do something to get ahead or you are falling behind". It&

How many attempts and how much human curation was involved. Every "I made AI do..." story seems to necessarily omit the "and I filtered out a LOT of rubbish before picking this one good example."

That's certainly one theory on how to price labor, but it's not the only one (and not even the only one in our capitalist economy.) Worker coops, for instance, have a totally different theory of labor value. So no, it's not h

I was an engineer in a games studio for years. QA did not have an easier job than I did. None of my engineer peers would do QA work. Wonder why that was? Maybe because the life of a QA person was difficult? Long hours, contact labor, no ben

Hahahahaha. Having worked in the industry for years, developing games is way easier than QAing them. It just requires a lot more initial training and skill development. I was an engineer, and I don't think I ever saw anyone work har

Writing design docs isn't a bad part of the SWE job. > that doesn't mean you should make a union to do that. Usually folks don't unionize until their work consistently fails to deliver good working conditions, so, yeah, in

What's more difficult than a job that's absolutely soul draining and long hours for next to no pay? It's difficult to become a software engineer, but the job is relatively easy. It's not hard to become QA, or a fruit pic

You aren't paid to play videogames. You are paid to test videogames. It's asinine to think they are just playing the games - QA has complex skills necessary to succeed, from technical writing to careful test planning to cross orga

Good for them! More of this in the industry is needed, especially in game dev where workers are treated especially poorly. Activision is likely to drag their heels on negotiating for years, unfortunately.

It's not the same, and you are delusional to think that I'm being irrational. A 401k has regulations. My broker has a fiduciary duty to act in my best interest. The money invested into the markets helps power the economy. And yes,

The people who genuinely believe "code is law" are stunned to learn that: a) humans won't act "rationally", b) regulations exist for a reason, and c) no, the law is law, code is brittle.

At this point, not fixing it is indistinguishable from malice. We've known for at least a generation the side effects of means testing. Keeping them around is cruelty.

This is one of the most insidious side effects of means testing. The moment you improve slightly , you cross the threshold and lose the benefits you needed to get established. Which can mean getting a job can worsen your income and quality

Means testing (making sure benefits only go to poor folks) is such a colossal waste of time and money. And it creates perverse incentives where becoming slightly less poor can lead to a huge drop in benefits. If we gave everyone food stam

Yeah... Teach your kids the games they are interested in, and use that as an opportunity to build bonds. Poker, chess, go, Catan, Magic, whatever. Trying to optimize your child is so backwards to me.

Tesla is on rocky footing, imo. I own a Tesla, and have for 8 years, but I'm not convinced I'd buy another. They build low quality cars that have high range and a pretty good charging network. They have a self driving program that
