I am skeptical about the roofs over people's head argument. This is being used by buyers to rationalize mind boggling home values in Toronto and Vancouver. If the jobs keep being crappy, young people will just move away to better econo

I was an AFOL but stopped cold turkey because of this reason. Vote with my dollars and all that. Lego can keep their one-time special pieces.

As a casual gamer, I run into this quite a bit. Want to play online? Need a gigabyte update. Want to use Skype. . gotta merge your accounts. Makes me miss the days of the SNES and n64.

I usually purchase a lot of electronics hardware on a whim. With FPGAs, I'm forcing myself to learn how to use them before I spend the cash. There are quite a few boards out there though .. but this isn't a rec based on actual usa

My hypothesis is that people without significant real assets are all worse off since the money supply has been debased. Peter Thiel's book talks about "secrets" that are not really hidden but overlooked .. if he were to inter

I think you are right but wonder if it is just some kind of bias. Do you have other authors in mind who are leading the way today? I've heard of Verner Vinge being spoken of in similar term btw.

I'm impressed too but also dismayed by how little the average person (or even the average CS person) understands about the low level stuff. I had a top notch CS undergrad degree, but I'm only truly able to grok some of the finer p

When I used it for Java, I often would have to use the menu option to restart. Seriously .. a menu option to restart??? The stability wasn't as bad as the slowness. Also, OSGI seems to be a philosophy or cult. Things are just generally

See my post above. Windows thought my father's touchscreen laptop was a tablet, and put him in tablet-only mode by default.

Something very similar happened to me + my old father (not tech savy). My parents have carefully written down steps on how to accomplish various functions (seems very unnatural to me but that is the only way they get things done on PCs). I

Thanks for taking the time. For Canadians or Europeans with PhDs and a sufficient track record to make EB1 feasible, is it better to work at a research institution while one gets a green card, or is it better to just plow ahead with a start

Intel chip performance improvements seem to have slowed down. They add extras like acceleration for 3d prints, USB improvements, etc. But raw horse power seems at a standstill. I wonder if this is because they don't have a fierce compe

Good point.. in the old days, Internet connectivity was expensive so a lot of games supported LAN-based multiplayer. Those were awesome days. You could certainly achieve the same with the Internet today if you didn't have a central ser

They went up once and the fed is signaling a lot of caution. The earlier analyst consensus was 4 hikes this year .. it is down to 2. The latest commentary I'm hearing says normal rates by 2019 .. which is psycho IMHO.

I think your folks may have these issues if healthy food was "expensive" but sugary processed foods would be "cheap" and plentiful. By expensive/cheap, you can substitute waiting in line for price.

Be very careful maximizing 401k. If you live in a crazy expensive area, make sure you have enough for a down payment on a house (if u aspire for one). You can get a loan from your 401k for home purchases but the amount is pathetically low .

My worry is that a day will come when rents start to increase. My great fear is that this will happen precisely when interest rates are high. What will we renters do then? We will truly have no choice then. The housing market in the UK is g
