Thanks for newsminimalist - other than what comes up on HN it's the only news I read these days. It's usually just enough to keep me in touch without any of the outrage.

That's a false equivalence which is at the heart of the issue. You seem to be be assuming that "being informed" makes you better placed and/or more willing to take right action, but I'm not convinced that's the

I recently ditched Spotify for Qobuz. Spotify has always been a bit of a letdown, even though I've been using it since Rdio went bust (so ~10yrs). The thing that finally pushed me over the edge was the amount of shit content they push

This looks cool, but I'm not 100% sure what it does. Is the "music server" part just a backend for the web UI, or does it serve via other protocols like DLNA?

It's a job; not a cult. People come and go. If I were working somewhere that made me feel like I couldn't leave without being super secretive about it, that would be a huge red flag.

The big thing that got me to move off passwordstore to BW (and self-hosted vaultwarden) was sharing passwords with family. The app and browser extensions are nicer, too.

It's not at all false IME, though I'm not in SV or the US. Most job want up-front references from at least 2 people, one of whom must be your current supervisor/boss (or someone else higher in the chain of command). You can o

The question to ask yourself then is: why is it that the behaviour that brings you pleasure/meaning/satisfaction happens to align exactly with what the company wants? I spent most of my career with a similar attitude to yours, and

This is a good point. I have a backup strategy that includes cloud and offline HDDs, but at some point, when I'm not around to keep it all running, it'll probably just be family getting them off my laptop. I should probably look a

I thought that was a strange approach, too - I'd have thought it'd be far quicker to cull post-scanning. Plus, then you have the whole catalog digitized in case someone else wants to come along and make different editorial choices

I take a ton of photos. I cull probably 80%. The remaining ones are all pretty good/interesting/meaningful. I end up with maybe 1000 for a year, then pick maybe 100 of those to make into a photo book for the year, which is what th

The best solution I've come up with is jpgs in a yyyy/mm folder structure + EXIF metadata. I know it's not your ideal, but it'll be supported and platform agnostic for the forseeable future, and there are plenty of apps

That's like asking "is there a building industry" just because every industry uses buildings. Every (well, most) industries use software; but the production of that software is itself an industry.

I think you're under-selling your point. Forget highschool students - some of the greatest thinkers in human history lived 2000+ years ago.

I used to work somewhere that had a similar licensing model. I believe it was perpetual access to all updates (minor or major) released within 12mths of purchase, along with free support. Once your 12mths were up there were no further updat

Look, I love FWWM, but that's a brutal way to start. Firstly, it works a lot better if you know TP. Secondly... it's a brutal film. I've seen it a bunch of times and still find some of it hard to watch.

There are a bunch of hifi brands that are making great products but don't have great name branding: SMSL, Topping, WiiM, Fosi (I own 3 of those 4, lol). The upside is that they mostly seem to care about making good products rather than

I've been really impressed by how they keep pushing features out to old devices. Like, there was no reason for them to give the Mini 10 band PEQ - they could have made people upgrade. But no, the working (seemingly quite hard) to get t

Conjecture on the wiim forums is that they ran into licensing issues so their two flagship products (Amp Pro and Ultra) don't have airplay, but weirdly all of their lower-end devices (Mini, Pro, Pro Plus) do.

My favorite recent discovery in the HiFi world (after losing interest about 15 years ago) are the WiiM network streamers. Connect them up to any old system via RCA, toslink or coax and you can: - stream from a wide number of subscription se
