GitHub takes advantage of open source ideals to build its community...but doesn't open source its own software to give back to the community. It seems a little hypocritical. I'd feel much better if GitHub had a useful open source

I wrote Rails for a startup this summer, and had access to my own T60 and a MBP they gave me (I also did iOS, so it was necessary). I worked on both, but definitely preferred the Thinkpad. I run Crunchbang, so everything ran perfectly fast

It's always annoyed and confused me that GitHub Enterprise exists. GitHub is founded on the premise that open source is a good idea...yet for self-hosted git management the freedom-friendly solution is...GitLab. So good for GitLab for

If you use Firefox, I recommend the It's All Text! plugin, which opens $EDITOR in a new window and seamlessly transfers its contents into the textfield you care about. I think a Chrome version is in the works, but there's nothing

These details are befuddling. "Personal information was encrypted and cannot be accessed". It can't be accessed because it's somehow stored elsewhere, or it can't be accessed because of the encryption? That is, do

This is why I love having FB messages delivered via email. I get to read the content without triggering the read receipt, letting me reply that night or the next morning without possibly offending the sender. The downside is that recently F

I've done ICPC for the past two years, and will probably get dragged into it this year (small CS program at my school). We don't practice, and usually end up in the top third regionally. Not great. But it's just not worth my

If you read the HIG, Apple wants devs to use the splash page to show a picture of the app's UI elements--just with not text. All of Apple's apps do this--if you open up the address book, for example, it'll show you a picture

It's not incorrect, just misleading. If I made a Python descendant named Monty and said, "Monty retains the functional goodness of Python", wouldn't you give me flack since that's not the main point of Python? What

To a degree, yes. But that's because CL is roughly speaking the set union of all Lisps available in the '80s. Scheme was off doing its own thing, and knew it. Even today, languages make it clear where they're coming from. The

That's fine, I can accept that Racket favors FP. The point isn't that Racket tries to be functional, it's that Lisp as a whole doesn't.
