This is expected from MG Siegler. It's a worthwhile read (like much of what he writes). Just know the source and his biases. Funniest thing I've read in a while ==> "MG: show me on this doll where Google touched you."

You bring up some good points. However, to call it a "good investment" requires comparing it to alternatives. Two decades ago, not many alternatives existed (libraries? buying books? maybe private tutors?). A decade ago, the online world s

One thing people lose sight of is what I call the "whack a mole" problem. If we spend a ton of money fighting the big killers, but doing little to focus on rejuvenation therapies then we will just keep succumbing to a different set of dise

I tried to think of some constructive criticism (since that's more useful than "good luck guys!"), but couldn't really figure anything really penetrating, but here's my best shot at some question to think about, constructive criticism, etc.

Bottom line: In SV people who make stuff are respected. In NYC people who make money are respected. Obviously this is not true 100% across the board, but anyone who has experienced both cities will immediately grok what I'm talking about

I don't want to say "nothing to see here, just move on" But I'm pretty much going to say that. Any "race problem" SV has is largely a result of any "race problem" that exists in society at large. For example, why are there not more black en

I don't think anyone can predict where Palantir will go. They seem to be doing a lot of things right, but cult-like environments always have a high downside risk. The one thing that makes me think they are on the right track is that they ha

I think Silicon Valley is the answer, not the problem. There's a world of difference between the massively publicly subsidized, mostly zero sum financial industry and the technology driven entrepreneurship of the Valley. One hedge fund's ga

From the article: " Over the course of his working life, a college-educated white male .... will have earned about $2.3 million. His high-school-educated white-male partner will have earned $1.2 million." Let's say college costs $100,000 (t

If solar really does drop in price significantly and has a big impact, wouldn't that lessen demand for coal/natgas/etc? A drop in demand will lead to a drop in the price of those fuels everything else held equal. Of course, maybe the decli

That's exactly what I was going to say. This is a good first stab at measuring something important. One thing I was wondering was what "population" was used. I assume it's the city population. Using MSA or CSA populations could lead to v

For some reason I initially assumed $300,000 plus was your retirement target. I am now assuming $175,000 in savings is what you define as "financially independent" That makes sense given your $7,000 per year expenses. ($7,000 divided by

I would say the top 10 schools in any area have enough "credentialing/signaling" value to be a good investment. Outside of that top 10, the value is only in certain subjects (e.g. engineering, accounting, nursing).
