Maybe we just experience our brain making decisions. Everything else might be ‘unconscious’. Implying that our conscious experience of the world has no control over our brains. Otherwise conscious/unconscious implies some sort of duali

Pansychism seems to explain a lot of the hard questions. Even without a deeper understanding than 'there is a single conscious and you are a piece of it', simply thinking that way changes the understanding of life/death. You

Given what artificial neural networks are already capable of, it shouldn't seem like a magic trick what our own brains are capable of (from the outside). The hang up is on the inside right? You have an essence to your consciousness exp

I think panpsychism argues that everything is conscious, at all levels, simultaneously. There are no boundaries. What you experience as a boundary is just the limit of your awareness. Just as you don't consciously beat your heart or he

There is a cost to not using types - Dealing with bugs at runtime that would of easily been caught by a compiler. Difficulty in understanding your own code base - functions available, parameters on those functions, the properties on the obj

You can create a mess of code, open security holes, and/or be hit with ‘gotchas’ in any web framework. PHP is much less complex than most.

Each PHP file is an endpoint. As opposed to having routers in code or client side SPA routing. PHP files can be deployed independently, swapped out or updated live. No building/compiling of the php files needed. A single layer as oppos

Google's Achilles heel is search and ad revenue (80%). Which is sad because they've been trying to diversify and find another major source of income for 20 years now. If a better search engine comes along and people switch over, t

Integration tests really are the best bang for the buck. So many times people think they tested their code by mocking something like the database layer and are surprised when the application in production breaks. Everything can be tested in

Lidar can create a great 3d representation of an environment, but then you're back to the same problem as cameras. You need some sort of AI to identify objects in the data. So the question is how much of an advantage does lidar give yo

I don't answer calls from unknown numbers as well, but still having my phone ring only to ignore it multiple times per day is annoying. Apple should really make this a first class feature for iPhone users at least.

I'd agree if the time spent was the same. In LA it will take you easily twice as long to get where you're going with public transit.

Wait for my Via, wait for my bus, wait in the bus in traffic, wait for the bus to make all the stops. I live in LA. I would rather sit in my car than take public transit here. The few times I have taken it, it has been such a bad experience

It's a community effort to keep this site from devolving into a sea of zero substance comments. The comment quality here is something that really separates HN from the rest.

I feel conflicted because just a couple years ago most comments to typescript articles were like the one above. Now that people are finally coming around and seeing the huge benefits to adopting it, comments like the one above are becoming

I can speak of the internet in 94. It was pretty inaccessible and/or unknown by most people. Most people paid like 20 a month for walled garden services like aol/compserve/prodigy which had no internet access only access to t

I hate how most of the money I pay Spotify goes to artists that I never listen to. A niche band that I love broke up for financial reasons, and I was of no help. Businesses that use Spotify to blast the top-40 all day are watering down the

Every workplace in LA has housing within a 20 minute rush hour commute. If you don't want to live close by that's on you. When I do drive places other than work it's not during rush hour so the traffic isn't that bad. NY

Pick any 2 points in LA and compare the time between driving and public transit. Thinking of all the places I travel to around here like the desert, mountains, Vegas, beaches, etc.. I can't imagine not having a car.

You mean people without a car? Because the freedom of having a car and being able to go literally anywhere relatively quickly is pretty great. I've lived in both LA and NYC for a number of years. In both places you can easily live 10
