Got some plane tickets out of Europe for late September. Plan to come back in March next year. It will be cheaper for us to go on vacation for a few months than it will be to stay. Many of my friends have already departed.

I think reputation systems could ameliorate this to some degree. If I could calculate a trust score recursively according to a list of people I trust personally, that would be a step in the right direction. 6 degrees of jblow. The more p

Because in many European countries the company is forced to open an office there to employ someone, which can bind them to European regulations.

Young people on the internet have been doing this since at least the 90s, though it's definitely become more popular (mainly due to internet culture spreading to normal society). Just think back to the LiveJournal/MySpace era - i

I long pressed on videos to say "not interested" that show gross dermatology videos, root canals, and ear cleaning. I would still repeatedly get those when I was using the app.

In my neck of the woods of Europe, you're not supposed to go running without a shirt - and people will let you know.

Can RISC-V save us here? Or is it time to start hoarding CPUs?

It works really well, but there's a bug: the exported JPG is different from the actual drawing. Draw a circle, put some text in it, export to JPG. Pay close attention to the alignment, it will differ.

What about one of those water features you can get for your backyard? They come in a variety of styles, including sort of a standing sculpture/set of bowls. You just need to plug it in with an extension cord.

Roblox can only handle 100 people per server. It doesn't hold a torch to true metaverses like UO, or ActiveWorlds.

There are very real, very scary monopolies in Europe that are actually an issue that will never be dealt with. Whether or not iMessage can talk to Whatsapp has almost zero effect on my life.

Netflix's mail-order service was bar none one of the best things that ever happened. They had a very, very good film and TV library. We would receive 2 DVDs at once, usually watch them and send them back, sometimes on the same day.

Limiting the scope of your personal opinions might actually make you more of a red flag. Having no social media these days is considered a big fat one among the zoomer generation.

I don't know the statistics, but I've never encountered bone splinters in any meat I've ever eaten in the US. As for the universities, it's not like I made this up. I'm well aware of the broad differences in qualit

Food standards might be lower, but I would argue that the food quality is better, depending on the country in the EU. Here in Germany, 25% of meat bought in grocery stores doesn't follow the most basic of butchering standards set forth

What's very funny to me, is that I can easily imagine every person I've ever worked with writing this same list, and also thinking of themselves as ranking highly. In fact, I think this list mostly boils down to "Do I like t

In UO, you could spend your whole character career in towns (although there were other ways to mess with people in town). In SWG too, where Koster was also involved, there was an entire life outside of combat. In WoW, for example, everythi

I've been following it, but there's almost no concrete information about it. I assumed it would be more like Roblox, or something of that nature.

I used to play Second Age up until around 2011. I tried to play it again during COVID, but it was pretty dead. UO Outlands looked interesting, but I don't wanna play UO exactly. I'd like to experience something completely new th

When will someone stop caring about money and make something like this again? Surely, the spending power of people who played UO is more than insignificant, it could at least break even. Charge $20 a month (roughly the same as $9.95 a mont

I watched this about over a decade ago. It's a great documentary - I think they even interview Grandmaster Ratte in it. I highly recommend pairing watching this with reading Commodork: Sordid Tales from a BBS Junkie by Rob O'Hara

What I've concluded over the years is that this is actually what the American people want. In other words, the policing is not "happening" to us - it is requested by us. The same way people like to watch those viral videos

As for why one thing is better than another, it's a sense that I get when I walk away from a good book. A deeply satisfying feeling. Sugar tastes good, I could eat candy all day, but try to explain to someone who only eats candy the
