My point wasn't to denigrate people for having poor taste or whatever. I don't care what people watch. And I'm not one to talk - I sometimes think of buying one of those McMansions from McMansion Hell. But my point was that

Recommendation systems just mirror what the users watch - including their age - and the reality is that 99% of people have horrible taste in just about everything. They can't tell the difference between a great film and a terrible fil

Star Citizen is the pretty much one of the only visionary MMOs since the mid 2000s (except for maybe Darkfall). I first read about it on Hackernews years ago - and ended up doing a deep dive on starcitizen_refunds. I watched a bunch of tho

At least where I live in Europe, it's almost impossible to not pirate. The government has strict controls on media and so it's impossible to even get access to most movies. Netflix, Amazon Prime and other streaming sites have be

In my opinion, this never goes away and you can only learn coping strategies. I never had this issue with classwork though, but checking my email/dealing with DevOps problems/filing taxes. For me, I can see when I'm getting

Can anyone in Germany use this as an individual? For example, I have an office job. If I write a song/comic book, can I just start using this platform or do I need to do some tax nonsense/form a company?

I've witnessed the opposite problem in Berlin. Parents, and the general public, seem underprotective of youth. I used to live across the street from a primary school and the kids (no older than 10) would come out and smoke at recess i

You have to call a "restore" function, according to their docs. I'm not sure I understand the use case, but perhaps it's just for structured user-only data.

Can you talk about this a bit more? Or have any guidance? I'm in Germany and wanted to do this with my cofounders, but couldn't wrap my head around the legality. Don't you also have to maintain a German presence basically? A

There used to be a search engine in the mid 2000s that was just like this. It was called ChaCha: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ChaCha_(search_engine)

I think it's interesting how different people view status, like the "Harvard Professor or Homeless guy?" quiz that used to get passed around. I grew up in one of the last WASP strongholds in the US and the more money you had,

A tax ID is not a company. I've started companies in both countries - the burden and costs of starting and running one in Germany is far higher. In the US, I can start selling muffins, wooden furniture, whatever to my friends, family,

With GDPR, it is seemingly illegal to host anything in the US, though (or anything with PII) - so that is one (forced) upside to these types of services.

I would say most people don't agonize over it because most people don't follow GDPR here in Germany. I think more and more people are slowly complying, but certainly in the last 3 years no one has cared. I personally believe GDPR
