Heh, thanks for the info, I have a bit of a gap of knowledge about that era of vehicles outside of a type II fun experience with an older Ranchero. I see VW advertising a car with an ECU in 1968, but likely just transistors.

I’ll add a small point to this. The computers my old cars do have, I’m quite thankful for. Being able to purchase a ~100-200 buck code reader and easily plug it in and figure out what my warning lights are trying to tell me has been a great

As a fellow “analog” automotive enthusiast, I’m curious how she defines computer in this situation? Given that ECUs / microprocessors have been standard on cars since the late 60s / early 70s. For me it’s the network connections a

I don’t have a dog in this thread’s particular fight and am basically just doomscrolling on a Friday night. But I don’t think English is a nominally supported language in Quebec. IIRC all of Canada outside of Quebec requires dual signage in

Unfortunately there’s no great answer — any mammal that bites could carry rabies even if not obviously rabid, and there’s no way to test for that when the animal’s alive. Running the prophylactic for rabies also ain’t cheap and runs the ris

While I can appreciate the simplicity of the older version, the lack of padding around text + monochrome made this a sea of black marks to me. Basically illegible. 2013 was much easier to read

All that juice on the delete button really plays poorly with iOS text selection. While I agree with the article in spirit, I’ll take this delete button dry (just rinse the glass please!)

Some of the most impactful code I've written has been absolutely trash. Like, really, really bad. By almost all objective measures, terrible. Except for the results it helped bring about. By that one measure, it was excellent, damn nea

Heh, ‘drop’ is an overloaded term. I don’t mean you need to release the bar from your hands or not follow through on the eccentric. By ‘drop the bar’, I mean you shouldn’t resist during the eccentric portion in the same way you might during

Hi, worth mentioning that you should explicitly ignore this advice if you’re lifting heavy deadlifts. Eventually you will get to a point on that exercise where your concentric pull can put up vastly more weight than you can safely lower to

The irony is that chatbots and automated phone support dont function like this — instead, they amplify anger. By the time you actually get to a human, you’re not just frustrated with the original issue, but the massive (and often bigger)

I mean, I’m a Mercedes fanboy, and I don’t. I don’t need to. I don’t care who’s running the show — the cars deliver on the brands reputation and that’s all I care about.

To be double fair, it sometimes felt that the Presidio was only technically part of SF. We used to joke that it was really Marin's foothold on the peninsula.

The Caddos were living in east Texas pre-Spanish contact! The Spanish word Tejas comes from a Caddo word. There is a gap in the literature though as to whether the Caddos had central air. We can only speculate.

Lived in the Presidio, all my neighbors plus our house has a pretty big mold problem, likely from the humidity. When we called maintenance, the answer was to manage airflow and yeah, it’s the presidio, stuffs gonna mold.

Idk if the second part is really fair - as a Texan turned SF resident, I can understand how the Texas heat can be alarming at first. But if definitely didn’t stop us from going outside, doing things, holding sports practices (outside the ra

FWIW, we did get Halo 1, and I think the Mac version was the first to let you fly a banshee and shoot a fuel rod cannon. Maybe PC came out first with, but these didn’t make it into the Xbox version. Mac might have been the first online halo

Because it’s much more efficient to heat up a modern car by driving it than it is to let it idle.

Hmm, I wonder if the increased resistance is overcome by the fact that ICEs can put out more power with colder denser oxygen rich air. This is why performance cars sport cold air intakes. This is also why your car won’t hit its quoted 0-60

IDK if it’s arrogance — it can be interpreted that way, but I think a more generous interpretation is that it’s really hard for people who haven’t been poor and chronically food insecure to understand what it’s like and the situations that

The tricky part of this is macro nutrient diversity and satiety. Let’s say $2 for 8 bananas vs $2 cheeseburger Assuming normal size bananas, that’s about 800 cal worth of banana. From what I can tell about that cheeseburger, 415 cal per ser

The cognitive energy is the least important point by a country mile. Again, you can’t optimize your way out of severe poverty. It is not a problem of mental fortitude, self induced or not. I feel like statements like the one I’m replying to

Pretty much all the food you mention are extremely expensive when your basic caloric needs arent met. $1 for broccoli that will give me basically zero energy is a really awful deal. If you have enough calories, then yeah, buy the broccoli.

You’re right, I’ll be a bit more specific. When you’re really poor, if you buy food naively or based on what is recommended nutritionally for financially secure people, it’s very easy to end up in a situation where you spent all your cash b

We _definitely_ wanted it. Badly. It was not a case of “not wanting it.” It was a case of: - a lack of time — a lack of resources (just two folks, no expendable income) - a lack of cognitive energy, probably stress induced from managing the
