As a fellow millennial I don't know what people are talking about. The world is way better today than when I was a kid: All sorts of racism and prejudice are at much lower levels than when I was a kid. I went through two economic cris

Probably a massive shift of traffic to still open subs. That'd probably take it down due to caches suddenly having all the wrong data. No inside info, though. HN seems to be groaning under the load too and might go down with Reddit.

This is my one big problem with Postgres. Their heavy client/thread model prevents these sort of architecture where you may have a large number of connections. PGBouncer helps a lot, but it's not quite the same.

I'm more worried about how the HN servers are doing. Hopefully they gave them a pep talk.

Only if you're sure 1 -> 0 is not detectably different from 0 -> 0. There's almost certainly secure ways to delete. But not worth it for a five year old drive that may have had sensitive information on it.

A lot of people lost a lot of money to scammers because of Bitcoin. It's secondary (to scamming) use case appears to be enabling criminal behavior. While personally I am grateful to be able to buy weed over the internets I am cognizan

I'm not sure there's a lot of polite code here. They are knowingly and intentionally killing a Facebook feature so that it can't compete with the app store. It goes to show you how lax antitrust enforcement when such blatan

Most of the major subs are modded by people who get paid by advertisers and other promoters to astroturf support for whatever. It's not hard to replace them.

I'm somewhat hopeful this gets the far left activist class to move to their own echo chamber like the Trump peeps did. Wish Reddit would go back to the let the upvotes handle it days. Would be nice to be able to sort by controversial

Every store has their branded option and in some cases like TJs it's almost all their stuff. So even if there's only 2 name brands there's lots of options. And companies don't compete solely against existing companies.

No, there just are lots of grocery chains. I can think of Publix, Kroger, Trader Joes, Whole Foods, Target, Walmart, Lidl, and Aldi all within driving distance of my house.

Mods are as much of a problem as they are a help. They rule subreddits like gods and (lots) abuse the shadow ban/delete system to silence opinions they don't like. Lots of others sell out to various influencers/advertisers

The problem is that one at a time times 100,000 DBs takes a long time. For every second a migration takes its 1.1 days. You can parallelize it, of course, but that's a challenge in of itself.

I do agree that at some point it breaks down. But dozens of teams probably should be split for organizational reasons anyways so splitting up tech isn't much more overhead.

In practice there's not much difference if you use a wrapper application. The wrapper application sets the version of modules and provides whatever glue they need. For Rails that would be gems in the Gemfile and mounted engines. To
