Most layman I have talked to think of evolution as having a fitness function selecting for perfection. Most of these type of arguments end up being about environmental pressure selecting non-desired traits rather than evolution per se. It's

I have found that out of approximately 500 users (talking face to face) you get 1-2 who actually DO know what they need, how it should look and act. We hired one and listened intently to the other. It's a long search, but really, really wor

It sounds like you have only ever come across poor business people. It's pretty easy though, they are about as common as poor coders and designers.

No one said they just stand there are shout words off a task list. How many non-technical founders do you know? There are a ton of successful ones out there, and when you meet them [as long as you don't say what you just did] you'll underst

So let me get this straight: to be valued in a startup you have to actually do the coding or design? There's a lot to be said for the value of vision and passion. They are probably the only two things you can't hire.

Not aimed at you, but too many people are searching for that magic "something" that will help them be awesome. When you get to the top of a field and talk with your peers, you realise that everyone else has the same questions as you, and th

Congrats on the launch. Most entrepreneurs know the feeling of missing deadlines badly ;) It's such a good concept, honestly, I would pay for a private one for my friends and family. The site didn't make it clear if privacy was possible.

I hope it's not just me, but there should be an equation based on objective measures about the desired product and the teams quality and experience that could determine the best development methodology. Obviously this would require a lot mo

I have seen terrible ceos who can code and great ceos who can't. The only common factor amongst the great ones is that they are smart and interested in learning.

Unfortunately, in the real world requirements are often poorly understood by not only the development team but the customer (making it impossible for the "hacker" to create the right software), and only after continued use of the in product

Maybe people will wake up and realise that real time doesn't actually matter; you can easily keep up to date polling 1-2x per month if you really wanted to. It's not like anything truly vanguard happens more than a few times per year in mos

Unfortunately most people aren't in college to learn, at least in the places I have been. I was the one of a tiny minority who was in the library during the holidays for example, or to research non-class materials of interest. Likewise, few

Also, to get something in front of users, you rarely need to be doing anything remotely complex. It's not like writing a disk based inverted index or a filesystem. When writing tools like those, obviously testing is important.

I'd love to see some research on this. I would hypothesize that there is a point of problem complexity where the lack of tests becomes a negative for productivity.

Please everyone read the second paragraph of brents insightful comment. Another place where tables have the edge: when a new browser version comes out, css layouts are often broken, especially if they rely on hacks.

There are two schools of thought in programming I have seen. 1. Design it right the first time, tests and all. 2. Build a throwaway, no tests, little refactoring as you quickly iterate Programmers who fall into category 1 in my experience m

I know three. Two started maths at uni at a young age and got bored. One is now a party animal/heavy drinker and another pushes trolleys at the supermarket. The other is a doctor because his parents pushed him into it.

Most big web companies started out either by design or fortitude by applying crossing the chasm techniques. 1. Define the large market. 2. Focus entirely on one small niche within that large market that will give you enough credibility to w

Patents have a requirement of utility. If the invention is impossible or claims to do something it can't this should defeat it's utility. In a perfect world, claims should be backed by evidence.

I did. People unskilled in patent law should be able to replicate the invention. The case law would clarify what this meant in practice. The reason is that even software patents are so cryptic that it's almost impossible to replicate them s
