Neither cats nor fish are commonly used as disparagement. Fishing is not usually thought of as a violent or vicious action. Pig and Butcher are worse than catfishing. But, if I were king, I'd try to think up a better term for it.

For choosing translations that match the topic. The phenomenon being described has nothing to do with pigs or butchering. When naming that thing in english, a better name should be chosen.

They translated it and used it. That's bad enough. I bet they wouldn't have done so if it translated to the n-word. Translators have agency and should take responsibility.

Really? This is your criticism? It doesn't cover the cases where the person isn't trying to extract maximum profit. But, somehow, in your view, calling a victim a pig is accurate enough for the term to be valid?

"Pig butchering" is an awful phrase. I can't believe that anyone with a shred of decency used it. The people who were harmed are not pigs. You below complaining about language sensitivity would probably be fine with calling r

argv[0] is a parameter. Like any user input, it should be treated skeptically. There is absolutely nothing wrong with allowing more than one way to invoke the same program. This article is simply silly. Fortunately, it will be ignored compl

I would use my debit card even if it behaved exactly like cash, ie, when the recipient got the money, my only way of getting it back is to sue them or call the police. Obviously any electronic payment system needs to be secure internally bu

Yes we do. Why? Because the old people running our country have not figured out that digital money is money even though most spending is done using digital money. Because they love corporate profits more than citizen wallets, they restrict

When I started using the web, this is what all pages looked like and tons and tons of people had personal ones just like this. It was so great. I used to love touring all the self expression. Not quite the first, but this is how mine looked

No. It is a result of a practical, engineering perspective. I love theory. It's necessary for moving the world forward. I also love getting things to work. Three quarters of NPM packages are CJS. Several of them are ones I wrote. The r

I agree. The blame belongs to the NodeJS steering committee. It's their failure and it's a big one. The only excuse is that ESM happened during the big Deno Node wars when the community was split, everyone was mad and, apparently

I have a ton of projects and a huge amount of utilities and such, that all use CJS. You cannot just use 'import' if you also use CJS. To use 'import', it must be an ESM module and the you cannot use require() to access C

I've implemented SSO in a small business context. It's insanely hard. Absolutely not worth it. Until Apple and Microsoft find a way to a LetsEncrypt-type comprehensive mission, it's out of the question. And, since Azure '

For good measure, it is an operation that executes by the runtime for every execution, not as a redeployment. Turns out that the ESM purists struggle to find reasons to condemn those of us who don’t have the need or resources to the chase b

Thank you for saying this. I got 'flagged' when I said it more irritably. The solution is so simple and the payoff so great that it seems to me that the standards bodies are a bad process. Me? I'd prefer importSync() to havin

There are a lot of arrogant people in Javascript-land. If you look at the number of imperious attitudes in this thread ("you misunderstand what a module is"!!), it's very bad. But it's also endemic of the attitude that g

You are simply wrong. I've been a full time NodeJS programmer for fourteen years. Module isn't some pure theoretical concept. It is a file that exports something in Node. There's a ton of 'maybe I need this file' in
