So you'll wait until the FSF finds it cannot defend the GPL in court and then try to get copyright assignments from thousands of programmers? That's downright stupid. If there was evidence that some third party could enforce GPL

How is "no whitespace" an advantage for a human readable file format? You could write JSON with zero whitespace, but you wouldn't because whitespace is absolutely necessary for human comprehensibility.

Probably the same reason you have people using XML for supposedly human read/writeable config files: it's hip.

The quality of programmers working for companies like this is terrible. I'm talking about programmers who claim to "know" C++ because they used it once during a computer science project and just managed to avoid getting segfa

I rarely use Skype, but I have it installed on my phone. The other day my girlfriend decided to call me on Skype after it had updated without me realising and I wondered what on earth was going on with my phone. It just popped up with some

I'd expect this kind of complaint from non-technical people. Disappointed to see this on HN. You stored your data on someone else's computer and you are upset when the owner of that computer did something with it?

This is basic awk. But grep is much faster if that's all you're doing. fgrep even more so if that's what you want.

The C specification requires that (x<32) is 0 or 1, but that doesn't mean it is necessarily possible to do it branch-free on any particular computer.

Define jovial. Define melancholic. It's music. The entire point is to evoke an emotional response. I can't define "warm" but people know what I mean when I say it and that's all that matters.

They actually did sound better during the very early days of CDs. Consumer DACs were terrible in the 80s. But these days that isn't a problem. CDs can sound great, but they will also happily carry all kinds of non-harmonic distortion

Really? Last time I was into listening to new trance (pre ~2006) there were only a small handful of labels that still pressed vinyl. I haven't seen turntables in the wild for years, alas. Maybe it's different with more "under

But it can sound warmer and to some people that sounds better. You just seem annoyed that some people enjoy things that you don't.

But they did sell CD singles. People just chose to buy the whole album. I suspect this is because a CD single was the exact same format as the album version and seemed a bit of a waste while 45rpm singles and LPs were physically distinct.

It's cool to play with a pack of cards and run sorting algorithms on them. To see the worst case of quicksort, use the first element as the pivot and give it an already sorted list. It will take quadratic time to give back the same lis

I can see why one might blindly call qsort on already sorted data (when using user input), but why sorted data with one out of place element? Presumably that element has been appended to a sorted array, so you would place it properly in lin

The "pay for click" is how they sell their product to advertisers. But advertisers do not pay for clicks. A click is worthless. They pay because they know that their adverts are being shown to the right people and there's a g

Sad to say that I haven't cited these in papers that I've published so far. Much software is taken for granted, especially libraries. I don't often see papers mention SciPy specifically let alone add a citation. The author of

What car do you have? I tried to nap in the back of my Civic once, but it wasn't successful. Partly I felt self conscious that someone might come near my car and see me, though.

No it's not so you will click it. They collect the data from customers and offer it to the advertisers. The data is a big part of the product they sell to advertisers: targeting advertising. They don't sell user clicks (why would

Of course 56k was slow. It's 56k. But if you ever used a faster line in the 90s it was virtually instant. Everyone has those faster lines now, but it's never instant.

In the 90s web pages loaded instantly. Now we have faster computers and faster networks, but apparently we need something like AMP to make the web fast. We have regressed.

What a waste of time. A text editor where "more responsive typing" is a feature is a joke. These problems were solved decades ago on far more limited hardware.
